Collapsing RT cats?
Hey all,
Long time rally fan, long time Subaru fan, just short on garage space (which means no WRX for me until I get a larger garage).
I'm looking for some feedback from some owners here who have installed Random Technology cats on their cars. I know they're pretty popular with the Impreza crowd and have been for some time. I'm a 350Z owner (major Nissan fan), and have begun reading a lot of threads about the RT cats collapsing, causing major loss of HP, but no real damage. The failures seem to be happening within as short as six months.
Thread posted here for anyone who wants to see pics:

The concerning part is that RT appears to be balking at covering these failed units. I was curious if this was a problem across other car models, or limited to the Z33 crowd.
I appreciate any feedback. Hopefully one of these days I'll pick up that WRX I've been jonesing for and get a bit more active on this forum.

Don't know if you can apply what members use on a Subaru compared with other car brands. Random Technology of course markets through its distributors exhaust systems for some models, including the WRX. These include their high-flow cats. The problem is that we have no way of knowing if the cats used in different applications are identical pieces or if cat placement in the piping has anything to do with premature failure.
You can search the WRX Powerplant forum using keywords 'random' and 'technology' and there are several hits.

Gah... forgot that they nerfed browsing on that site.
I did a search before posting, but the threads were pretty thin. I guess the RT cats for the WRX have been pretty reliable. I know what you mean about each application being different. My thoughts were if RT actually made the cats themselves, then they might use similar contruction techniques across the board, thereby possibly having identical problems in other installations.

That would be my guess too but I just don't know anyone personally using one. Here in CA, it's illegal to modify or replace the factory cats unless certain very restrictive conditions are met (quest for power is not one of them) so a lot of members simply go catless until smog check time.
