911 vs. Boxster question

Hey,

I have sort of been shopping for a Porsche - I have tried a couple of Boxsters, 2003 S and a 2002 S. Both drove pretty well, but I was unimpressed by the power.

The most notible difference between my car, 2003 WRX with 2.55 liter and Green, was that my car felt sluggish to turn after driving the Boxsters.

I have also been considering a 1999 911, but I haven't driven one in a while and don't really recall how it felt, but my recollection was not that it was as underpowered as the Boxster.

Anyone have an opinion on either a late 199x 911 vs. early 2000 boxster?

Richard Hammond from Top Gear said it best... "the only reason you get a Boxter is because you can't afford a 911..."

it's funny how you thought of top gear. right when i saw this thread i was thinking top gear as well, but more along the lines of jeremy clarkson.

"And then there’s the reaction he got from people in proper Porsches, by which I mean the 911. They laughed, too. Because turning up in the big city in a Coxster is like turning up to Elton and David’s white tie and tiara party in a rented DJ." --clarkson

i can't afford either, so what can i say lol. if you can afford a 911, get a 911.

agreed...if you cant afford a 911 then thats why you have a boxster
but really...a boxster is still a very nice car just make sure you get the 997!

btw - will you be on your way to 1000WHP with this car too?

Power wise the 911 has a little more to offer, handling wise the suspension is much better set up on a 911. By the years you picked I'm guessing you'r looking for $30-$35k. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the 996 body, although the 996 handles better, I'd take a 993(I had one till shortly after the kid came along) simply because of the lines. The 996 leaned further towards the boxster with it's bubbley look while the 993 has the pronounced flares and just better look to me. A 993 cab with RS wing and nose is sex on wheels. A boxster looks like a 911 got drunk one night and ended up with a miata, 9 months later......

boxster

993(93-98)

996(98+)(the rear kills me)

I wouldn't mind a Cayman S though, they are pretty damn nice.

I don't think it is that simple. The power to weight is not that far off between the two. Here's the BIG difference. In 25 mph - 55 mph marked corners the Boxster S is a four wheeled motorcycle. When you get into triple digit sweepers the Boxster S is VERY nervous and it is a scary place to be.

The 911 is exactly the opposite. You want to do triple digit corners (say marked 65 mph corners). The 911 sticks like it is on rails and you do not need nerves of steel to do it! But, it becomes a large car and not nearly as nimble as the Boxster S in the tight canyons.

I have owned both, rented both and drove for Porsche print ads and commercials for about 5 years (including the launch of the Boxster) as a 'professional driver on a closed course'.

It's called choosing the proper tool for the proper job. I like my license and terrorize tight canyons at 'near' legal speeds. The Boxster S fit this driver the best.

Where can I really use the 911's trump card?

Way too rich for my blood - this car is also my passion, but I just can't afford it.

If I had just a little more money, I'd probably buy the 2006 Vette - I really liked the one I drove before. If I had a lot more money, I'd have a turbo 911.

I think the Porsche Boxsters are really nice cars. I was considering an early 2000 "S" to replace my WRX since I now have a 3rd vehicle (Sport Trac) that can carry my kids. Unfortunately, wifey invoked her veto power after checking with AAA for insurance on a Porsche!

GR8-WRX don't let her get you down... tell her how it's gonna be... don't let her tell you... you gotta be the one to tell her what time it is!

how is a boxster more than a wrx.. ya its a porsche but the wrx is the fricken wrx.. turbo, racer, etc etc. the boxster is not really owned by racer kiddiez.

and i hear the boxster can actually out handle 911 (maybe it was the cayman?) i was reading car and driver at the airport about 2 months ago.

The WRX is a 4 door so it's not considered a sports car, whether it has a turbo or no matter what kind of people drive them. The Porsche is a 2 door "sports car" and the parts are expensive as hell if it gets wrecked.

I have heard the exact same thing, and I know someone who was scared ****less in the boxster and he said it felt reallly unstable if you went remotely fast. Still nice cars though and I'd gladly take either . Their interior is to die for

haha, that makes sense didn't think about the part cost. thats probably the only real determining factor once you're over 25 with those two cars.

and every insurance company i have talked to progressive, mercury, bristol west, geicko, and farmers all considered it a sports car because of the turbo.. i dont think the door count is the only thing that makes a sports car a sports car.
