Could be the case - it's called a splitter, which is (on our trucks) a kind of paddle switch on the front of the shift **** that takes it from the low range of the gear to the high range. You just flip it to high while in gear on the upshift, let off the throttle just a little, it switches to the high gear, then back on the throttle. Usually, it's a gentle transition. It's downshifting that can get tricky for noobs, and that might have been the case with this one.
