You should have bought 245/40-17. Stock 2.5rs, Impreza WRX and STI is 25 inch overall height.

225/45-17, 245/40-17, 255/40-17 is what's recommended because those are 25" or same as factory tire height so it won't throw off your speedo..
You said the same thing too me when I got my 245/45/17's, but I don't notice a difference at all... Speedo is off by like 1mph at 65 and the difference is minimal... Def not something to worry about at all.

Having 245/45/17's is fine as long as you have wheels that are wide enough to hold them.

you know around the bay having alittle extra side wall isnt really a bad thing. I'm on my second set of 245/45/17 first was a set of falkens 615'a and now Ive got brigestones Re1r's. The extra side wall will help soak up them pot holes.

Not sure how wide you're talking... I've had about five different summer tires on my WRX and STi(Yoko ES100, Sumitomo HTRZIII, Bridgestone RE050A, RE070, RE01R)... all 225's and the ES100 tramlined the worst by a large margin. Actually I barely got tramlining with any of them (even the hockey puck RE070s).

Come to think about it, I would recommend any of the tires I just mentioned above except the Yokos. They came on my first WRX when I bought it - at first I thought they handled great (n00b with AWD and 17's) but as time went on I was able to research and try different tires and there are much better tires out there.
