Yah the signal coming out of the iphone headphone plug is pretty weak, hence the line out dock cable. Works pretty well, noticeable difference and was cheap to try. Unfortunately my car radio (Rockford Fosgate 8250Ti) doesn't have an aux in nor does it play mp3 cd's, so i haven't been able to test a phone playing through my car system. I can tell tho that a cd burned from a 360kb mp3 sucks compared to one burned from m4a or flac.
Who wants to start the official audiophile meet so we can try some sweet headphone/amp setups?

I found a set of Sennheiser HD-380's at Best Buy on Almaden in San Jose but they could not figure out how to sell me a set and would not sell me the demo model. I am totally convinced this is the model for me. Sounded a lot like my XB700's straight off my phone @ max volume, but more bright and with much better mids/highs. Definitely need an amp! I wish I would have had my amp with me at the time to test it too. Probably still need a solid 40-50 hours of break-in before they will sound great, but just need to get a set and get started.

I finally broke down and ordered a set of Sennheiser HD380's off Amazon, and they showed up today. I know I need a solid 40-50 hours of break in on these before I should listen to them. So I have been working on that. After 8 hours, there is already a noticeable difference (hello, bass).
All I can say so far is, if you are using your phones with an amp or receiver and unless you know for sure that you have a better product, order a set of these right now and get started on the break-in. I chose the HD-380's because for now, most of my listening is around other people, so, as much as I would like to have a set of HD-650's, I couldn't even really use them since they are open.
I bought my Sony MDR-XB700's for $76 in 2010, but now I see that you cannot find a pair for less than $250 and some folks have them for much more than that on eBay right now. Having used mine for almost 4 years now, they are nice - even great, but, the HD380's are nicer. So far, in the very first stages of break-in, they sound AMAZING but farther away. Can't imagine what they will sound like tomorrow (as break-in progresses). I plan to leave them connected to my receiver through the night playing something with a beat at around -30db for the next couple nights.
At $135.95 on Amazon, I can't think of a better buy right now. Though, I still want to try out the Beyerdynamic 770's that were recommended earlier.
Currently using:
Source: Alternating between iPod classic w/ FiiO LOD (thanks LGTMark!), Sony D-555 Discman, and Sony D-321 Discman for comparison (line out, of course)
Amp: Headroom Total AirHead
Phones: Sennheiser HD380 and Sony MDR-XB700
Best part ever: I grabbed my phones from shipping today, and my boss saw them when I un-packed them. He asked me why I didn't get some beats by Dre......

Strangely enough, many of Monster's IEM offerings have been rather good...I have a set of Turbine Pro Coppers and Miles Davis Tributes that are outstanding in my opinion for a dynamic driver set up (I did pick them used though at a good discount).
Their headphones on the other hand...bleh...not my cup of tea. I think they end up many people's first foray into "high end" headphoes from stock ear buds or or other similarly cheap headphone. In that regard Monster/Beats will sound a better...and combined with marketing and celeberty indorsements...WHOLA!
I am primarily a Sennheiser, Beyer and AKG person. My main portable headphones are Senns Amperiors and my primary home cans are Beyer 990 (800 ohm) and AKG240. But my collection includes a range of other brands Denon AH-D1100, Phiaton MS400, Sony MDR-XB500, Koss Pro DJ100 and a few others...and even the cheapest (Koss DJ100 are $40) sound miles better than any of the Beat can offerings.
