Sonora, CA -- 62 year old Peggy Campbell of Oakdale was killed in a two vehicle collision Saturday afternoon at 4:25 on Hwy 108-120 east of LaGrange Rd.

According to the CHP report 19 year old Ryan Rice of Merced was westbound in a 2003 Subaru traveling at 55 mph when for an unknown reason he allowed his vehicle to cross over the solid double yellow line into the eastbound lane where it collided with a 1998 Honda driven by 65 year old Richard Campbell of Oakdale. The point of collision was the passengers' side of both vehicles.

Peggy Campbell had to be removed from the vehicle by the jaws-of-life. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was lifeflighted to Modesto's Memorial Hospital with both arms and legs broken.

Rice suffered only minor injuries with a complaint of pain to a knee and hip. He was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center. Rice's passenger, 14 year old Emily Via of Merced, suffered two broken ankles. She was also transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center.

Campbell's death marks the fourth traffic related fatality of the year in Tuolumne County.

With the passing of 16 year old Trenton Montgomery of Mountain Ranch this morning at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, there have now been nine traffic related fatalities in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties this year. Montgomery was the fourth to die from the March 1 two vehicle collision on Mountain Ranch Rd. that also took the lives of his two sisters, 22 year old Kallie and 17 year old Skye, and 34 year old Jeremy Peters.
Idiot 19 yr old driving up our insurance rates and giving WRX's a bad name. Horrible for the couple.

The sad thing is that it always seems as though those who are at fault walk away, and the people driving responsibly see the worst of the accident.

I think it'd be interesting to find out what caused him to be out of place, I wouldn't be so quick to deem it "irresponsible" when it said he was going the speed limit

Exactly. We don't actually know what he was doing. It's not like he was going over 100mph, rear ended a car going the limit and killing a passenger. Now THAT is irresponsible.

Ok, true we don't know all the details.

But Occams Razor, what's more probable?

- aliens came down and briefly abducted him
- "oil patch" caused him to "drift into the other lane"
- "brakes failed" or "bit by the RE92's"
- was occupied dialing his cell
- actually lied about speed and understeered wide

(This is just a prediction when/if the details come to light)

I'm betting on the simpler answers.

Speeds at moment of impact are usually estimated by trained professionals based on the damage. Notice it says "According to the CHP report 19 year old Ryan Rice of Merced was westbound in a 2003 Subaru traveling at 55 mph" not "According to 19 year old Ryan he was westbound in a 2003 Subaru traveling at 55 mph"

I'm sorry, I just take offense at people automatically assuming younger individuals are automatically "irresponsible"

Im guessing he like feel asleep or had a seizur who knows, he crossed both lanes there doubt he was going thaaaaaat fast. It's a stock wrx I mean how fast could he really have been going during the day without other cars seeing him. Also I'm pretty sure the police could easily verify if he was going over 55 and "understeered wide".

I'm hoping this wasn't directed at my post. I said it "seems irresponsible...due to how far left he was on the road." I never brought his age into this. I myself am a young driver, but I know that the younger ones are usually more prone to reckless driving.

I mean, of course it could have truly not been his fault...

reckless wreck less.

I think they invented the word reckless when they realized what wreckless actually means

driving wrecklessly is the best way to drive
