Windshield Suction mounted devices

Windshield Suction mounted devices
I saw this on the Garmin website and never heard of this law which applies to California and Minnesota.
"NOTICE TO DRIVERS IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA: State law prohibits drivers in California and Minnesota from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. Other Garmin dashboard or friction mounting options should be used. Garmin does not take any responsibility for any fines, penalties, or damages that may be incurred as a result of disregarding this notice. (See California Vehicle Code Section 26708(a); Minnesota Statutes 2005, Section 169.71) "
I'm not sure if this is a new law or has been around a while. There are so many Sirius, XM Radio, Radar Detector and GPS navigation users out there using the windshield mounted devices.

interesting, there are a lot out there... maybe best to hide those things
there's a lot of vehicle codes to go thru... if u get a ticket, look up the code to see if u really violated anything, so when u goto court u can have them throw out your case for being cited a violation you didn't violate

I've seen someone on the boards mount their detector in the spot where the useless plastic flip down piece is on the headliner (above the rear view). So I guess that could be another way of getting around the law.

my V1 sits directly above the rear view mirror. the only bad thing is the passenger sun visor can't flip all the way towards the windshield... i've never gotten, and hopefully never will get a ticket for this...

that's because you didnt get a cop who either doesnt know THAT law or just wanted to get you for other things.
i remember when the seatbelt law came into effect in the 80s/90s.
one news crew rode with a CHP. the CHP said one thing they can stop cars for, back then, was minor things like fuzzy dices hanging from the rearview mirror.
once the car had been stopped, they can check whether all people in the car had their seatbelts on...
