The key is knowing and understanding how the mechanics of driving a manual work. If you don't know, then it's hard to understand exactly what you're doing and why you're doing it.
My one piece of advice to you is:
Most people will tell you to let out the clutch and give it gas at the same time... When you're learning, this is BAD advice.
What you should do is give it gas first while the clutch is in...Take it to 2k RPM and leave it there, then start slowly letting out the clutch and giving it a TINY bit of gas as you're letting out the clutch. The reason people stall is because they dont give it enough gas when they are letting out the clutch, so to fix that all you need to do is give it gas before you even start letting out the clutch.
Trust me, try it and you'll be set. Thats how I learned, and I was driving within about 15mins. I tried the other way that people tell you to use, let out clutch and give gas at the same exact time, but damn that was hard when you're a n00bie.

i taught my self to drive Manual
never driven a Manual in my entire life, till i got my 2004 STi
3 months later im at the Drag Strip haha
running faster than magazine stock times with my bone stock STi
thats just burning your clutch, really theres even a easier way
at a complete stop
- clutch in all the way,
- put it in gear (1st)
- slowly start letting off the clutch pedal until you feel the car slowly moving forward ( or about to move foward )
- then slowly gas
- then youll notice clutch is no longer need
and WALA your moving forward, no clutch slipping, no harsh power transition
-----
if you guys actually notice you can make the move nearly 5mph @ 500 - 700rpm idle without using the gas pedal, with the clutch completely off
just have it clutched in all the way and slowly let it off, once you feel the car starts moving forward even slower let off the clutch pedal, pretty soon your goin to pick up speed and you have the clutch fully engaged and pretty soon the car is moving just like an automatic would, if you have it on " D "

I taught myself for the most part. I was working at the golf course for my first job, and our range ball picker broke. Instead of trying to fix it, they brought in some lil 4 speed golf cart lol. One of the guys at work told me the basics and i went out and smashed around. I fell in love with driving a stick then, but it took me like 5 years to finally own my first manual. The first car i learned on was a civic though and that was cake.

self taught at 14. learned on an old vw bug that i "borrowed" from my brother's friend. it was in our driveway and left the keys in case it needed to be moved. i decided to move it...and drive around town with it.
everything was going smooth until i needed to make a 3 pt. turn. i was like, "why won't this thing go into reverse?!" i had no idea that on vw's you needed to push down on the shifter to get into reverse. finally just went up on the curb and sidewalk to turn around.

John D, used to be the master tech at Santa Cruz Subaru when he was working there... Took me out for 30 minutes and taught me how to drive a stick on my brand new 02RS...
