SA2005 will cover just about anything you want to do for the next year or two, at least until the next SA standard is issued, then for most events you typically have a year or two grace before you need to go out and buy a new one.

Understandable, since M rating doesn't offer the same protection as SA rated.

I think Impreza01 is searching for an auto-x lid. But if he's going to get serious with other motorsport events/classes, an SA rated lid is definitely worth the investment.

What does "SA" stand for and is it different than a DOT and Snell rating?

SA is the Snell prefix for automotive racing certification. M is the rating prefix for motorcycle use.

Not really; I do more HPDEs and tracking than autocross. So that's why I said I want an Snell SA2005 helmet. Thanks for the suggestion on the SF shop. I'll try to check it out sometime, but it's far.

What models are those Shoei helmets? I thought Shoei had M2005 rated helmets.

dude the best place to go is the BELL warehouse in oakland, try them and they usually have blemmed (just the paint) helmets for cheap. I bought mine their and they were very nice.

Both places are local and you can either buy via their website or visit their location to actually try on helmets. Both places have many other racing related supplies too.

I bought both my helmets from Ken Myers at IO Port. Picked up my SA2005 helmet last week!

I thought it was approximately 10 years? I bought my SA95 in June 2000 (a few months before the SA2000's were available) and am having to replace it now because of the 10 year rule on helmet design - not purchase date. I have been told that the SA2005 that I just bought will be good until the end of 2015. So I will replace it with a SA2015 when they become available at the end of 2015.

Yeah, it's 10 years or every 2 SA test update. SA test standards are updated every 5 years. So the 2 year limit is not logical.

Different sanctioning bodies have different tech requirements and time limitations for helmet certification.

The most lax will probably be about 10 years as some of you suggest, maybe even 15, but some will certainly be stricter.

It is a good idea to read and review the rules for any race organization you want to play with.
