General consensus for readily available and easy to find oil is Rotella T6 5w-40 or German Castrol (castrol oil, look on the back make sure it says Made in Germany) 0w-30. You can find Rotella T6 at Wal-Mart, Autozone, O'Reilley's, and maybe some other places. German Castrol usually can only be found at Autozone.
thanks for your recommendation!

also, what oil filters do you use?

Where do you purchase the gasket for the drain plug ??

u know, after thinking about changing oil myself.

first, i would need to purchase ramps and oil pans.

then purchase 6 quarts oil, filter and gasket. Is it really cheaper than bringing it to someone to change the oil?

What kind of ramps do you guys use? My car is a little lowered on tein springs.

If you're in San Jose and lazy, go to Oil Stop, they are pretty cool. I used to go to one in Sacramento when I lived in the capital.

My wife changes the oil in her Forester - sometimes changes the oil in my Forester. By the way, if you purchase six quarts of oil, you'd better be driving a Subaru SVX, or you're going to WAY overfill your oil pan.

Harbor Freight for ramps, auto parts store for oil container, and you're done with investing.

Then it's money in the bank. 5 qts. oil, one oil filter (stay away from Fram/OEM filters).

Oil filters should only be Subaru OEM or Purolator.

Purolator used to make the white SOA oil filters. They still sell an equivalent to the Subaru oil filter, but made much better than the blue SOA Honeywell oil filter [metal endcaps]. The Honeywell oil filters use cardboard end caps (which is fine if you don't drive hard), but the Purolator oil filters have metal end caps, and are very well constructed.
Also, Purolator is the only aftermarket brand that I know of that uses the proper Subaru bypass-valve specs.

Considering you have a WRX, go with a Purolator PureONE (i'ts a bit better than the "regular" white Purolator products).

Find your filter here:

If you like the Fram filters, you just go buy a Fram filter. Cheaper than buying the re-branded Fram filter.

We bought half a case when it was announced that Subaru was moving away from the Tokyo Roku filters.

It's really a shame that Subaru of America stopped bringing in the black Subaru Tokyo Roki oil filters. It was one of the best OEM oil filters out in the market.

At least the Purolator PureONE isn't a bad choice (and still has the Subaru-spec bypass valve).

Speaking of which, I don't want to derail the thread too much, but does the new FB engine use a different type of oil filter? Is it a new part number???

Yeah the fb motor uses a larger filter. I can't remember the part number but its roughly the same size as the h6 filters.

i took my car in for some diagnostics for my misfire. Supposed to be a 2 hour job. To keep my long story short it took them 4 days to get my car back.

I will be posting my yelp review when I get the time. 1 being a master mechanic and the other two mis-dianosed... So far their diagnostics were right on and solved my problem. I have to say I trust them but they only have 3 mechanics which prolonged the time taken to dianose. I ended up fixing the problem on my own because they had to order parts and would probably have taken another week to get my car back.

There are some nice subies in there being worked on.

If its just an oil change they do carry motul for 69bucks with filter.

Just beware of the wait...

Also the reviews on yelp are pretty old..

If you live in San Jose/Campbell, just drive the few extra miles and go to a dealership or good quality shop. I used to live down in Monterey, THAT was a drive to get to a decent shop. If you're already in the bay area, go to one of the shops with proven quality and Subaru knowledge.

Think of ramps as a long term investment that you'll be using for years. As for what kind of ramp, I just use the rhino ramps.

You'll probably save money in the long run if you do your own oil changes yourself.

Last time I looked, not even the purolators meet proper Subaru bypass-valve pressure specs.
