anyway, anyone here in the bay area can give a newbie here a lesson on changing oils on subie? I also want to learn other stuffs too!

I just owned the car for a month. Oil change is not due anytime soon, but I just want to learn how to DIY before the time comes.

I am really interested in learning it and knowing it is done right instead of dropping it off to a shop.

Thanks!
Is the car brand new or did you buy it used? If it's new, have someone who knows what they're doing with you, because the oil filter can be a PITA the first time, and PITA is an understatement.

Also, before your oil change, look into getting a Fumoto Drain Valve. It saves a lot of time and mess

I bought the car used, 05 with 40k miles. It already have so many other problems the dealer doesn't want to take the car back. Sigh

Anyone have reviews on a place called "Garage 1" on Almaden Expressway in San Jose?

They're literally walking distance for me. I probably won't take my car to them all the time. But for major stuff, it'd be convenient. If they're reasonably priced, and honest people.

Why does this thread have hmmwv as a tag? That's the military short for the humvee.

Because one poster has that in his "drives" information. Those tags are so useless!

With the amount of money you use to pay for an oil change at the dealership or some shop, you would have enough to buy supplies you need for at least 2 oil changes if you did them yourself!

You could also ask your dad for help. When I first learned how to drive, my dad made me learn.

I'm curious about this shop as well, as they seem to get good Yelp reviews. It is the closest Subaru shop to where I live in SJ near Campbell and am considering trying them out when my next service is due.

+1, and also, I agree with Ray, youtube it, so easy. Seriously, swapping trunks, even if you didn't do the springs is more difficult than changing our oil. It's beyond easy and I can't think of a car that is easier to change oil on.

nononononono, no royal purple. Subaru motors tend to be very picky with oil, and Royal Purple is a horrid oil.

General consensus for readily available and easy to find oil is Rotella T6 5w-40 or German Castrol (castrol oil, look on the back make sure it says Made in Germany) 0w-30. You can find Rotella T6 at Wal-Mart, Autozone, O'Reilley's, and maybe some other places. German Castrol usually can only be found at Autozone.
