When I used it a lot, I got one of those cheap "Type-S" cellphone air vent mounts from Kragen. It worked out but kind of fubar'd the internal fins of the vent (although if I remove the vent I can fix them). Now if I monitor anything like coolant temp or MPG I just plug it in and leave it in the area in front of the shifter.
I pulled my OBD-II port off of the dash panel and secured it up within all of the other wiring so that I don't worry about kicking it. I think routed the USB cord so that it comes out up by the steering wheel and sits in that groove between the wheel hub and the gauge cluster.

I have see tons of people who mount it to the section next to the cupholder under the center vents. That block of plastic literally does nothing.
I will most likely be mounting mine there as well.
I am going to use a 3M command strip for hanging pictures... it is similar to velcro but both sides are hard with loops and they kinda snap together... VERY strong hold and no wobbling like standard Velcro.

When I had one, GD Wrx, I use one of those cell phone holders you can get at any of the auto parts aisles, and secured it to the vent on the left side of the steering wheel.
I'd recommend not leaving it out in the car as much as possible. Some J.O. steals it and you're screwed.

I use the "Type s" cell phone mount as well. Just don't really like using it because as stated it will fck up your internal fins. I think if my moms bf doesn't use the suction mount in the Miata I think I'ma start using that to mount my AP. Otherwise don't bother even bringing out the AP.

IIRC, there are just barbed clips. But I could be wrong. If you aren't claustrophobic just stick your head in there. Otherwise unscrew the panel to give yourself more working room.
