The major differences between moto and motorsport helmets are the ventilation and the fire retardant. I have used my moto helmets for years with no problems yet, though I haven't to burst into flames so I dunno..

Yes. It was one size down so when it breaks in it would fit perfect. But it loosened up and moved around allot. I later tossed it out. I have been sizing helmets like that for 25 years never a problem.
Also have to remember that no one head is the same. What fits one person with a round head maynot fit someone with a cone head. Try everything on first. But remember you get what you pay for.

Call Bob Weiss at Competition Safety Gear. http://www.cs-gear.com/
He's in Campbell, brings his trailer to events all over the area. I see him at UFO Events in Marina and Watsonville Speedway. He's a good guy and knows his stuff as well as being local. 408-370-0400

Just before my recent Laguna Seca trackday, I purchased a Shoei TZ-R from Helmet City for about three bills total. For simple trackdays and nothing too competitive, it should be fine. I bought it from Helmet City. They're in Fremont, I think.

if you crash hard enough to start a fire chances are you will be knocked out
you get knocked out for less hard crash
you want fire retartant materials

Where do you draw the line?
If I crash badly enough to knock myself out or start a fire, I will potentially have more issues to worry about than simply if my helmet is fire proof. Would you dare get onto a race track without a cage, harness, HANS device, fully integrated fire suppression, complete nomex underwear and a race suit? Because you "want" those too.
All that being said, do a little research on helmet differences and make your own decision. If I did anything more serious than the odd HPDE or drove harder, I would invest in a SA helmet. But, it's your head. I already have up-to-date nearly new M helmets, so I use those for now.
