where to buy driving shoes?
i need a set of driving shoes (no, not for driving to work in!), and would rather be able to try them on and buy them locally. does anyone know of a place in the South Bay, preferably the San Jose area that carries driving shoes? thanks.

PUMA makes driving shoes? this is certainly news to me! i was actually thinking about either Sparcos (pricey) or Simpsons (a bit more economical), but i'll take a look at PUMA's website to see if there is any info there. thanks.

Puma makes a pair called Speed Cats. I haven't been able to find them anywhere but on the web. Kinda hard to try 'em on that way. Not sure, but I think I may have read they made/make shoes for Sparco.
There is a place in Oakland that advertised Simpsons. I just looked for the url, but I guess I dumped it. I found it by doing a search for Simpson driving shoes.
You could also try searching for Piloti shoes. They seem trendy enough that you might find someplace you could actually try them on.
If you have no luck, some suggestions for driving shoe substitutes I've seen are:wrestling shoes, indoor soccer shoes, track flats, martial arts shoes. These are good if you're after something not specifically for the race track, something you can drive in as well as wear around and not look like a ding. I hope you have better luck than I have had.

yeah, Puma's website still shows driving shoes with the Sparco logo on them. kinda makes you wonder who makes whose shoes.
thanks for the heads up on frey racing in Fremont. i'll give them a shot one of these weekens.
i'm not planning on doing city driving in these, they're mainly for autox and the occasional track day.

Ok, I don't know who would have them locally, but if you watch Rally races and Subaru in particular you have to go with Alpinestars:

Yeah PUMA makes driving shoes and the more amazing(amusing as well) news to me is that wearing driving shoes has become a trendy thing in Hong Kong. I just read a magazine article about this and most of the people wearing them don't drive. It's hard to understand those trendy things.......lucky that I spent my young years in the US so I did not have to look like an idiot in HK

www.piloti.com oh wait.... yeah. The interweeby part again. Too bad- when Nissan of Japan sent it's best hotshoes to the states with some Skylines, Sylvias, and such, they all showed up wearing Pilotis... just a thought.

yeah, it's easy to find these things on the 'net, but it's hard to try them on that way. both the Pumas and the Piloti's look good, so maybe i'll make the trip up to SF to look for a pair. hell, i wouldn't even look *too* odd walking arround in some of those pilotis...
oh, and after spending lots of time on and arround racetracks on motorcycles, i can't stand Alpinestars. after you've seen their gloves and boots come apart in a crash it's pretty hard to bring yourself to buy anything they make. just a small personal bias i developed.

frey (i think) has piloti's in thier store, otherwise you can definately make a pilgrimage up to Sears Point and hit up Wine Country Motorsports at the track. They have shoes, fire suits, etc etc etc. FWIW, I'll be buying a new pair of driving shoes soon at Frey, since mine have big ol ugly holes in them now.
