The calendar we use now is the Gregorian Calendar and was adopted in the 1500's. The first 365 day calendar was the Julian calendar developed in 48 BC.

I was informed by a history major that according to the Anno domini year notation does not have a year zero. We jump from 1 BC to AD 1. So, according to the historians I'm wrong but history is a stupid major anyway.

When someone says that they were born in the 60's, do you ever think that this person could have been born in 1970?

counterpoint:

actually, the decade does end on Dec 31 2009. As long as you started counting the decade from Jan 1 2000.

Websters defines "Decade" as 1 : a group or set of 10: as a : a period of 10 years.

Theres nothing about the term "Decade" that definitely binds it to Year One. Technically, 1995-2005 was a Decade. so to answer when does the decade end, all you have to say is , what decade?

Good counter point. I'm going to go throw it in someone's face now. Stupid history majors.

^Yes and no

If the question were "How long is a decade?" or "Starting from this date, xx/xx/xx, what date will it be when a decade has passed?" then that would be right. The question was "When does THE decade end (not A decade end)?

Same thing applies to "When does the millenium end?" or "When does the century end?"

yes and no.

You are correct that a we speak of the term "Millennium" starting from Year One, but thats because it comes straight from the bible.

Websters - 2. A thousand-year period of holiness mentioned in Revelation 20, during which Jesus and his faithful followers are to rule on earth.

the term Decade has no definitive connection to the greco-roman calendar. Remember theres other cultures out there with their own calendars, years, decades that dont care when we started counting our years
