What's that loud noise?

I'm about 1/2 mi away from my exit off the freeway when I hear a loud noise (almost like from a loud engine) from the rear of the driver's side. I found out what it was when I go to switch lanes, because when I did, my rear left tire doesn't go smoothly over the lane markers and also made a funny sound. What's great (or weird, depending on how you look at it) is that the car was handling normally still, even going at freeway speeds on a flattening tire. It allowed me to exit w/o any accidents or whatnot.

So I have a flat tire to fix now but I made it home (I live very close to the freeway). I do have a spare, but there is a slight puncture on the outer wall. The punctured tire is part of my stock set, and the now-flat tire was my full sized spare.

Now that I come to think about it, the flat tire is the one I got from Satrya! I demand a refund!

My friend who works at a tire shop assures me that the puncture is not deep and can still be driven on safely, but I might have to look around and find another tire. Better be safe than sorry!

So, does anyone have a decent re92 for sale?

This happened at about 10pm tonight. And I'm glad I'm okay too (just think if I'd been going at left lane speeds! ) Guess it's that time of year for weird things to be happening to me!

careful about sideway puncture. dont know how many $150 tires (on my truck) i lost when the tire got hit.

tire places wont fix/patch sidewall holes. only the ones in the tread....

Yeah Aya, I'd have to add my voice to the chorus Gagan started-you owe yourself- and your car a better set of tires!

nothing I've driven (short of dedicated snow tires) is any worse than RE92's on any of our local road conditions, when they have fresh tread there isn't much contact surface and as they wear down they only get slipperier (is that a word?)- I really think you'll be safer on just about anything else.

besides, replacing them one at a time really messes with your diffs and drivetrain too.

Maybe I could just patch up the flat as I don't have the cash right now to purchase a whole set.

Or I could just bust out the bike and pedal!

But in case I end up being able to get some new tires, what do you recommend? All-season, 205/55-16, less than $80/ea would be my preference.

If you go that route, ask your friend at the tire shop to take a really good look at your flat tire. You drove on it long enough to lose a lot of air - I say this because you could hear that weird, cyclic strumming noise that flats make. If you hadn't made it home and continued to drive on the flat, the tire would eventually have disintegrated, with the sidewall coming apart first. Consider having a tire expert examine it closely before patching, or discard the thing for safety's sake.

I just ordered a set of the Sumitomo HTR+ as they have a good rating for snow traction and pretty decent scores for everything else

and the clincher- they're only $62 ea from tire rack.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll definitely make sure the tire is okay to patch, but if not, I'm doing research to see which tires to get.

No it's not the same one. We switched that one out at the party.

And thanks, Gagan!

can i semi-hijack and ask if you have any thoughts of going with 17" rims?

i just happen to have a set of bronze sub zeros really cheap... you just buy the tires. (1 rim has a slight chip in it, but is still good...)
