Whats a good inexpensive reliable pistol?

I know there are quite a few gun enthusiasts on the forums here. I have been wanting to pick up a pistol of some sort for sometime. I am hoping to get a reliable and inexpensive pistol. I hope that is that too much of an oxymoron. But I would like some suggetsions of specific guns. I am definitely looking for a semi auto. Not sure 9mm or .40 maybe. A good inexpensive/reliable pistol for beginner that I can develop with I guess.

From what I've read Glocks apparently are very reliable, but they seem to be pretty expensive. Some quick googling, glock 23 came up a couple of times.

Since I am a person who really can't allow myself to pay retail for anything, what are procedures to buy a 2nd hand pistol and where abouts do you think I can find one?

TIA!

Well if you're looking for a used pistol then anything is an option given the price. You need to call around local gun shops to see if they have used/consignment pistols. I'd look for any 1911 model pistol (Colt, S&W, Springfield, etc) and even Glock even though i'm personally not a big fan of them (too light for my tastes). This doesn't mean they aren't reliable as they are, in fact, very reliable. You may be able to get a good deal on a used Glock considering the retail on one typically starts lower than Sig and HK. If they pistols are on consignment then you may be able to haggle a tad, especially if they've been on consignment for a long time. Offer a reasonable price and they may contact the owner to see if the offered price is acceptable.

Glocks are definitely reliable.... and more reasonably priced than an HK or Sig. As for finding one second hand... *shrug* Maybe try a show?

Many people are going to say Glock. But, Glocks have a very distinct grip angle that many people find uncomfortable (including myself.) So, my vote goes with the SigPro SP2340 or SP2022 (pretty much a cheaper HK). Both are available in 9 or .40 and are extreamly reliable. They feel like a million bucks compared to a glock IMO. If you really want a striker type pistol (like glock) and not a hammer type (like Sig or 1911's) you might want to look at the Springfield XD. Same grip angle as the Sig with the same basic firing mechanism of a glock. The problem is that if you find Glocks to be expensive, you're not likely going to be able to afford anything reliable. Glock's price point is pretty much entry level. Def give www.gunatics.com a look.

Go to a range like Reed's and rent a few to shoot and find out which one you feel comfortable with... everyone's hands are different and a something people recommend on here may not be necessarily something you'd like.

in kalifornia, you have to transfer any firearm via an FFL (or a federal firearms license) dealer.

charges will vary. for a new firearm, that includes a DROS (dealer record of sale ) fee which is a mandatory $25. that includes the background check.

then each dealer can tag on their own "service" fee from $20 and on up.

for a private transfer, i was just at BIG 5 and i notice they charge like $19 for a PPT, but for only long guns (er, rifles).
