Have a man trip planned in a week and need to link two PS3's together so we can have a LAN party.

I'm a PC guy, don't normally play consoles... I did a search and it appears that I need a router to link them? How lame is that? There has to be an easier way? Can just connect them with a cable?

Goto settings then network > Lan> run setup after the 2 ps3 are hooked up > connected with an Ethernet

 

I think the easier way is buying a crossover cable to connect the 2 systems together, its like connecting 2 servers together via crossover cable

 

Ummm, there's no such thing as a "crossover" cable. You mean this, since that is exactly how you do it:


The only thing is, I am not sure this method works for LAN party unless the game itself supports LAN; not all games do.

 

That sounds like a much better way than using a flacking router.


We have MW1 and 2 to play... as well as some FIFA 2012!

BTW, FIFA 2012 is so fun when you have 4+ players on the same team. We want the other PS3 so we can have the other 4 players (opposite team) to use their own TV. lol

 

Um, just because you have never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't real. You are right in a sense though, as a crossover cable is no longer needed.

Pretty much every NIC produced after 1999 supports auto-MDIX making crossover cables generally irrelevant unless you are using old hardware that is 100BBASE-TX or lower.

 

Sorry, meant there is no crossover cable specifically for the PS3 (didn't mean that they don't exist), or rather in this case, it is effectively nothing more than an ethernet cable. I haven't done a crossover cable type setup or a null modem setup for LAN games on a PC in a looooong time.

 

Crazy that there is no such things as a crossover cable as i have 5 of them in a drawer to my right.
I have been told that using a crossover cable makes connecting the two ps3's easier. I have yet to try it my self.

Easier than what? Just plugging them into each other with an ethernet cable? Don't see how it would get easier than that. The instructions were already provided.

Unless you enjoy playing one-on-one your plan is flawed. Can't have more than one person per console on a LAN setup.

 

Life plaza, you have failed me. There is no "LAN" setting when you go to network settings.


Basically we have two PS3's, no internet connection, and an ethernet cable to link the two. I tried a couple nights ago and it didn't work. So router looks like the other option?

 

Let me try it tonight with MW2. I have 3 PS3s. I think the LAN setup is in the game itself, not the network settings.
