I like comcast. My parents have sbc and the difference is small. Either way, it's far better than dial up.

I used to have Comcast shared with some housemates. It was great service, and, with the bill divided between the 3 of us, it was only $20 each per month.

Now I have DirectTV and no-one sharing. This makes Comcast too expensive because they charge extra if you don't have basic cable. I think it worked out close to $60 a month last time I checked.

Nice find. But how come they list Covad as the provider instead of SBC?

I just did a speed test on dslreports w/ my cable...

Your download speed : 4974754 bps, or 4858 kbps.
A 607.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 356057 bps, or 347 kbps.

Love it.

I had comcast for over 2 years and it was great until they the new houses started to get it and what seemed to happen was they over subscribed as the connection would go up and down like a Yo-Yo between peak hours more often than not simply dropping packets. The techs they sent out had decent equipment and no clue how to use it and generally did not want to fix the issues or know how to trouble shoot them.

I since switched to SBC as I could not handle it anymore and although slower has been much more reliable.

it all depends. DSL is cheaper but they do not offer a 6mb dowload.

the fastest SBC offers is 3 Mb/s for $24 per month.

http://www02.sbc.com/DSL_new/content/1,,90,00.html?

SBC used to offer a 6mb/s before but not any more.

So Cable users what are you paying per month (not the promotional price)?

cheers

Nick

Maybe you need to call SBC an get the same plan for $24.
Or call speakeasy and tell them to match the price or you will seek another provider.

Nick

Ps: Speakeasy are SBC DSL resellers.

Yes. go to dsl reports and find the bay are forum. You can post there and there are techs that work for SBC that can give you all the answers. There is even a forums for problems that gets very good response and service support by local techs.

To be honest since you are still dial up you should be fine with basic dsl for $15 a month. I would take the advice I can get 600k per sec with a grain of salt. Speed is great but I am only willing to pay up to a point. If it is all about speed I am sure i can lease a partial T3 and have the fastest speed. But at what cost.

Cheers

Ah yes now I remember that you were saying something about the distance from the CO last week, is there any way for me to find out that info?

Don't worry about the IDE, whever you have time is cool . I haven't gone into panic mode yet cause my replaytv still has plenty of storage, assuming my GF stops recording so many charmed episodes

I will go look up the other DSL providers, but I am assuming that they will be more expensive.

Thanks

SBC does not allow CLECs to have access to their DSLAMs. Covad installs their own DSLAMs in the COs.
The CO distance check used there takes your information and looks for other subscribers in the area.
Add some calculation for determining additional pair distance to your house compare to others, and that gives you the loop distance.

Are you looking for the best or cheapest broadband. Without a doubt, Comcast is the fastest you can get Up stream and down stream. Not the cheapest though.

Any new opinions for high-speed internet that is cheap?

I'm still looking at SBC DSL, being that it is $15 a month for 1.5 mbps. But they also sell a "pro package" that get's up to 3 mbps. How consistant is SBC DSL as far as speed?

Any other good providers around $30 a month?
Download Speed: 2469 kbps (308.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 412 kbps (51.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

That's my 3Mbit.512K package speeds. I'm like 17,330ft from my CO, so i'm connected to some Remote Terminal that close by (that's connected via fiber optic to the CO). I have to say they're $25/mo for this package or new customers. Pretty damn nice. My DSL connection HARDLY, if ever goes down. we're talking 1/year. If is does go down, its more likely that my dad forgot to pay the phone bill, and we don't have phone service. lol.

I highly recomend SBC DSL if you are on a budget. I had the 1.5/384 package for about 1.5 years, and I thought it was great. I just upgraded cause I didn't know the 3/512 package existed.

BEST PART ABOUT BEING AN SBC CUSTOMER: After one year, you call them back, and get rerated for another year, usually near the promtional price. Some people are able to haggle even the promotional price year after year!
