Question What are you suppose to look for in a good downpipe?

Im in the market looking for a downpipe for my STI and i was wondering what to look for in a downpipe. I've heard something about a bellmouth on a downpipe, is that better?

Yes, you want a bellmouth or a divored wastegate downpipe. I'd recommend the helix downpipes because they are great quality and make good power. Also the price is unbeatable. Also be sure you have a boost guage to monitor everything because you might get some boost creep unless you already ported the wastegate on your turbo.

Personally I would just use a decent replacement drop in filter (ITG being about the best I have seen)

Just make sure if you get any replacement air filter that it is NOT the oiled type, like K&N, Green ect... the oil is bad for your MAF sensor. People may have contradictory opinions about this but I ended up having a problem with my K&N after running it for about 4 months... and the filter was not over - oiled.

Each case may be different, but you probably have a buildup on the MAF and the mesh screen near it. Best thing to use is electronics cleaning solution spray, it'll clean it off and dry up fast. Anyways... back to the thread topic, definetley get a bellmouth dp. And don't get suckered into buying an HKS for super cheap either.

oh hmm...so most likely eventually something will go wrong.
do you have any brands for this electronic solution magic stuff or where to get it?
I think i'll just pick some up and use it before anything happens

I forgot what brand it was. Kevin from Carlsen Subaru used some on my MAF while I was getting some stuff checked out on my car a few months back. Maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about, check around at Fry's or a computer store. They may have revised the MAF from 99 to 02+ but just to be safe might as well clean the sensor every few months. Basically what it did on my car was cause a CEL and my ECU learning was wayy down at like 3% I think its supposed to be around 8% or more, I can't remember though... I'd have to ask Kevin about it again.

I used to use ITG until the oil messed-up my MAF, then I switched to the JDM STi Panel Filter, made of non-oiled cotton and foam, to great success.

I have heard that the 2005 Legacy 2.5L low-emissions panelfilter is made exactly the same as the JDM STi one, and costs $18 instead of $87...something to look into.
