The AR has long since won the battle for best "assault rifle". Keep in mind though, you aren't allowed to buy a "real" one in CA
If you manage, buy an SCAR

Can you buy a SCAR in CA?? That would be sweet. I haven't considered that option till you mentioned it.

Eh,

The only difference is we have to have a bullet button when in the state, not a big deal.

M1A/M14 > M16/M4
No one uses the M14 as a base of fire weapon. If you want to put up a wall of 7.62mm lead, get a M240. That being said, the M1A/M14 does make a good designated marksman rifle. However its weight and length makes it too cumbersome if you're clearing houses or doing any running and gunning.

In an urban setting with a lot of bad guys running around, I'd rather pack a lighter weapon system that can carry more ammo.

I've had the chance to fire a SCAR-L before. It wasn't overwhelmingly better than any other 5.56mm carbine. It also really doesn't do anything an M4 can't do. Well except for the folding stock, which is nice if you're in a vehicle. One thing in particular I did not like about it is the reciprocating charging handle.

I prefer my 7mm Rem Mag to my .308 and my AR to my AK.
But if I could only take one weapon with me, the 870 pump wins.
Each round puts nine 9mm projectiles on target which will drop any threat in its tracks.

You can get an SCAR; there is a shop up in the East Bay that just got in a shipment

The guns ain't magic, they are just another evolution in the AR platform. Side mounted charging handle good stock. They are pretty badass

One could debate the .308 vs 5.56 thing for days or one could simply look to the fact that every major military force in the world uses 5.56
Without a doubt, .308 is more deadly; but they are heavy (more than twice the weight), loud and expensive In a SHTF situation would you rather carry 50 rounds of .308 or 100 rounds of 5.56?

ALL OF THAT SAID
I'm with Paul. If all you can have is one gun; a good 12-gauge shotgun is unbeatable.
The power of the gun, and the variety of ammo makes it more versatile than anything else out there

I'm guessing they were selling those SCARs at close to $3k?

Shotguns can be out done by someone 30 yards or further. Even a simple 9mm Glock can outdo a shotty. Shotties are good for close ranges, I would say go for a AR undo the BB and put some kits together and have a few 30 rounders ready to go It is SHTF right? Who cares about laws that are silly and slow us CA peeps down.

Also name that shop, I thought about every shop I have been to and this one does not look familiar to me at all.
