Question What would make for a better SHTF rifle?

If you had to choose a rifle for primary defense use in case of a SHTF disaster type scenario. Would you pick an AK or AR? I own a Sig 556 already but I'm looking for a different weapon system for my next purchase. I'm leaning towards the AR because it uses the same mags as my 556 does. But I like the reliability of the AK. Hmm what to do?

Do you really want to have to stock another caliber/magazines? I would think it would make more sense, in a shtf mind-set, to keep things consistent for redundancy.

That said, my primary shtf would likely be my shotty.

ARs are very reliable. It's how you take care of it will determine jamming/stove piping. Not to mention, police and military forces all use NATO 5.56 so I'd imagine 5.56 would be a little more readily available in a SHTF instance. and for how much you can mod a AR is great as well..

That was an AR.

I would stick with the AR platform in 5.56 or 223 whatever. The 5.56 will fire both but not vice versa.

Anyway if you are looking at the AK for a reliability standpoint then get a piston operated upper for the AR.

If it is stopping power you desire the civilian ar rounds have no problems there. Or you could go 6.8 use the same mags but the ammo is expensive and not as redily avail. 5.56 you cna strip of dedies in a SHTF scenario.

To the OP, go with a quality AR from a reputable manufacturer. A top tier DI or piston system AR will be every bit as reliable as any AK platform weapon. The AR is also much more versatile than an AK as you probably already know. The modifications you can do are endless.

5.56 is very common here in the U.S. you shouldn't have any problems acquiring ammo for your weapon. And since your other rifle is already in the same caliber, it makes sense to stick with it for logistics sake.

My first choice in a SHTF situation would be a SOPMOD'd out LWRC M6A2.

you can have the semi auto's in small little pop gun sizes...

I will have my Rem 700 in .308 and my scope and be taking down zombies/russians/liberals from 500 yards off

In truth my SHTF kit is 4 sets of guns, broken up into 3 cities, along with water/food for 3 for 1 month in the same locations, and enough ammo to keep things interesting.
