i've heard that you are never supposed to wax in a circle. There are actually waxing tips on the tube or box itself. Check those out. I use good old meguiars gold wax. It's old school. Which is why i hate it. Im terrible at waxing as it is. Next time i'm going to opt for the new high-tech wax which goes on consistently, fills gaps, and doesn't swirl.
I wax my hood a lot, but that's about it. The sides are impossible for me to do. I don't do swirls. i do sort of a horizontal wax motion. It looks nice when the sun isn't really bright. But when the sun hits it, you can see aves and it looks like i didn't wipe off the wax. it's real nasty.
i don't even know why i'm posting. i'm terrible @ waxing. Just remember not to do circle motions. And pic good wax. Oh anyone try that liquid wax? sounds questionable.

Wash and dry your car. Make sure the paint is cool to the touch. Best done in the early evening or early morning. keep it parted in the shade.
Also depence on which kind you're using. But for most take a clean soft cloth and work in small circles in 2'X2' areas. then move to a different area. After the wax has turned white use another soft towel / cloth and remove. once you're done with the whole car give it an entire once over to try to remove any lint.

oh yeh. make sure you get all the wax off. i have residue left over that just won't friggin come off. it's driving me insane. once it dries real good, esp on plastic... it'll be hard to get off.

clay bar, polish, wax
wax on let it dry/settle whatever wipe it off with clean rags. i usually switch off rags when waxing off it works better. i would recommend polishing before waxing if you are patient enough (or love your car enough  ). same steps as waxing just different stuff. polishing will fill up the scratches hide swirls. if you want to do even more for your car then clay bar first. you get lube for it i think i use the mothers instant detailer. that will pick up all the stuff thats stuck in your paint.
1) wash - mmm... (black magic car wash smells good)
2) clay bar - gets nasty gunk and rocks out of your paint
3) polish - fills up scratches and chips
4) wax - protects paint and makes your car shiny

rule number 1- do not to get the wax on plastic !
but that old stuff will come off painted areas if you re-wax it, spend some extra time working over the spots with the old crusty stuff, but usually the solvents in the wax will loosen up the old stuff. Then be sure get after it right away so you don't repeat the problem
