What I did friday/Saturday! Rescue dog training! *lots of pics

Lots of fun training.

I did a 1.5 mile hike leaving my scent through urban areas in dublin, which ended at the sheriffs office.
We had scent trails, building searching, people pretending to be bums and protecting their "home" when the search dogs and handlers came up to them.

hopefully photobucket doesn't photoFAIL. Normally I upload to my own domain.

210 pictures in the full album, a few hotlinked below

feel free to hang out on my car!

handing dogs to me over a bar thingy

oh crap! he got my scent and is making a mad dash towards me!

those who goto the zen meet and MVKK know whats up with the skittles i have a pack hidden in my radio chest harness
(obviously i'm dead tired! huge bags under my eyes!)

this rescue dog decided to just jump up onto my lap and get all comfortable! bad dog!

If my guy wasn't afraid of water (he's getting better about that though) and wasn't so stubborn I'd love to do what kind of training with him and myself!

yes
well, they are trained to find you, then rescue people come and get you

Trailing dogs are trained to follow the path that a lost person has taken. Similar to traditional "tracking" dogs, these dogs require a properly preserved scent guide (i.e., a scent article like a sock or glove) and are not distracted by other people in the area. These dogs work on long leashes. Trailing dogs most frequently work trails that are several days old.

Area Search dogs are trained to find any human scent in the area.

Cadaver dogs are trained in the location of human decomposition: tissue, blood, bones etc.

Water search dogs trained to locate human decomposition which emanates from under the water. These dogs work along the shore and in boats to locate the scent as it rises through the water.

Avalanche dogs are trained locate avalanche victims buried in snow.

Disaster dogs are trained to locate victims of many natural disasters that may be buried in rubble from a collapsed buildings. This type of dog is most often used after earthquakes.

CARDA is the California Rescue Dog Association http://search-dogs.carda.org/join
I don't have a dog, but I plan on joining them as a tech. So I can help with radios, communications, and assisting the dog handlers.

I'm currently a member of Alameda County Sheriffs Search and Rescue Unit. The 2009 basic class starts this thursday with their class orientation, and physical ability test is this saturday.
