What the hells going on in Dubai?!?

Very impressive. I haven't kept up on that part of the world, but it is quite interesting.
I don't understand how it can economically support that kind of growth though. It's a great location port, and tourism is supposedly exploding, and "oil is only 6%" of it's economic base.
That's it?
Tourism can't play that large of a role. Port, banking, and "IT"... again how can this all add up to explosive growth like that?
Is this really just a case of oil buying a critical mass of infrastructure? Using oil to build up an independence from oil is smart. But it just seems just too fast...

They also attracted a lot of foreign businesses over with industrial parks with lots of attractive perks (like 100% tax free, allow 100% foreign ownership, etc). Dubai Internet City is the main one, though there are others.

Well, the reason for this is because they know their oil supplies are on the verge of drying out, not within the next 10 years, but shortly thereafter... what they are doing is making the country into a tourism and banking country rather than an oil country for that will allow the country to flurish after the oil is gone.
Very smart thinking.

I recently saw a special on Dubai on PBS. It was pretty interesting. Basically, the top dawg in Dubai wanted Dubai to be the economic bridge between europe and asia. So they courted all these top banks/businesses to setup shop in Dubai. At the same time Dubai need to build up its infrastructure. That combined with the top guys love for being outrageous spawned what's going on in Dubai right now.
It also helps that there is no EIR process there. So they just build whatever whenever!
