50 MPH (it didnt sound like you lost much speed braking) is plenty of speed to flip a car 3 times. The front passenger corner was the only part to make contact initially, causing the back end to rotate around. The rest of the front end dug in, amplifying the rotational force. With the front against an immovable force, the momentum carried the car sideways and went over and over. Watch the police chase videos to see what I mean.

btw -- the ES100's I'm running right now grip fine at ~ 34 psi but slide like a motherf**ker at 44+

It does seem much more likely that the car was driven through oil that they spilled on the ground in the shop, but improper tire pressure could definitely have played a role, too.

...and I'm done. But again, just glad you're okay, Ed!!! Let me know if you need a ride to the dealership to check out a new STI

ES100's are terrible... they are alright for the first 3-5k miles... however, after that, they are terrible.

Yeah they're far from my favorite. They work better at lower pressures than I would like to run them at. Sidewall's a bit soft, which is my main complaint about them. Of course, they'll last me 27,000 miles sliding on them like crazy ... and they're $80...

Hopefully next time I need tires I can afford some "real" tires

I wouldn't be suprised if they inflated the tires to OEM spec. This is set in place with RE-92's. With a higher perfromance tire an increase in tire pressure is usually expected. With that kind of understeer that must be what happened. Sorry to hear about the car. Just remember cars are replaceable, you are not. Glad to hear your ok.

You can.

In college, I was heading out to West Virginia to ski and had my right two tires hit a patch of black ice. I was going 50 on a straight stretch of road. THe car jerked, and I overcompensated on the steering wheel. WHen the tires got traction again, the car pulled sideways and rolled two or three times.

Oh ya, I didn't leave any skid marks, either. Just a whole lot of broken glass and and some blue paint off the roof.

Jesus Ed... glad to hear you're ok.

A couple of years ago in my WRX I over inflated my rears at an auto-x to see how things would go (ie get the rear around instead of plowing, i was just screwing around though). Anyway, when they broke lose it was just *snap* and the rear was completley out of control. If it was all fours it would have been crazy...

Again, glad to hear you basically walked away (well, once they unstrapped you and finished poking and proding you. ) Also hope you'll find yourself in a new Subie soon as well. You'll have to share pics when you get some.
