I work at a landscape architecture firm and we've designed several artificial sportsfields with recycled rubber infill and all that jazz. Surprisingly, they still need to be watered to keep temperatures down and to rinse all the blood, seeds, spit, etc. And they shouldnt have to be replaced every couple years. They have fields out there that are 15+ yrs old and being used.

Also using the right irrigation equipment can save around 50% of water use.

I probably sound like a *****.

When i was down in So Cal 16 years ago seems like most the lawns were made up of painted green rocks lol.. I was there on vacation seeing my grandmother and well i come from the country so i was in shock over the green rocks. Grandmother told me it was because they had to conserve water and people still wanted the yards to look green.

My only concern with artificial turf is the fact that is a synthetic. What happens when one is removed? Where does that synthetic lawn end up? The landfill? How harmful is it to produce a synthetic lawn?

Probably silly questions, but I feel they need to be asked.

IMO, desalination is like solar power. It's not hard, it's just expensive.

Behind every good idea is someone looking to get rich

It's extremely power intensive. However, there are some new technologies that may actually utilize salt water as a power source. Saw a cool How Stuff Works this past weekend.

GE is developing a desalination rig on our coast that is powered by a nuclear reactor - what do they do with the NaCl rich water they get after desalinating?

They use it to cool the reactor.

Epic Win. Free 100% pure water for everyone.

we've tried to grow a lawn, but redwood mulch suffocates it. Lawns suck anyways for urban houses...make a front patio area instead.
