warning... chp task force checking baffles in:

wasn't that always the rule.....aftermarket exhausts must << 95 db.....w/silencers or not??
sorry, i don't get this new baffle/silencer check addendum. seems to me that this just leaves the door open for a lot of misinterpretation+wrongful enforcement/citations by misinformed or overzealous CHP officers...."your exhaust is illegal. it doesn't have a baffle/silencer."
imo, this just removes the burden of making officers claim that exhausts are exceeding the 95 db limit. now they can just issue citations based on a lack of baffles/silencers and let people sort it out w/a judge or ref.

2: Not much is new there. People have gotten sent to the state ref over all sorts of things that didn't warrant it.
3: The burden of supplying proof is ultimately up to you, not the CHP, in matters like this.
I don't think there is a "baffle law", but what they're doing is targeting known 'offenders' and simply seeing if the melon shooter has a baffle. CHP logic is: melon shooter + no baffle = ticket. Melon shooter + baffle = under 95db so no ticket.

i'll agree that burden of proof to justify "legal mods" has always been on owners not officers, but i also know how many of them operate & their loose intepretations+enforcement of laws. i'm pretty sure they won't just be checking rides w/melon shooter/canister style exhausts for baffles/silencers. their primary focus might be to go after those, but you can bet they'll nab people w/less suspect exhausts if they don't have baffles/silencers too.
oh well, as always, you gotta pay to play. times are hard. everyone, incl the state needs $$$ nowadays. be careful out there, y'all.

There is no 'baffle' law, no such thing. This is simply profiling, plain and simple. This is also localized ramped up enforcement of sound laws that have been on the books. None of this should come to a shock or surprise to anyone.
I don't doubt they'd pull over any car with a shiny exhaust, but this whole baffle check thing is just their 'justification' for writing you a ticket/send you to the ref. Your chances of being 'that guy' do go up based on what your exhaust looks like. Sucks, but its the truth.

and, while there might not be any explicit baffle 'law', bulletins like these set precedents for how officers enforce actual laws & vehicle codes.
