Visiting from Washington...are studded snow tires legal?
Hi all you Bay Area Members
I have a question regarding the legality of driving with studded snow tires on the road around San Fransisco
I'm driving down from Washington state for Thanksgiving and I was debating on putting on the Hakka's just in case the pass has some snow.
Does anyone know if it is legal to drive on studded tires around the Bay Area?

If your regular tires are all-seasons, I'd bring those. The studded tires will be crap the whole time you are here, and for 90% of the trip to and from. You're better off just getting some chains and being prepared to wait a couple hours at the pass if need be.

If I remember right we cannot use chains on the Subaru's
not sure why, but I remember someone saying that before
Guess I'll see how the Kumho's do in the snow

Studded tires are _ABSOLUTELY_ legal! The California Vehicle Code [Section 27454 (e)], permits studded tires to be used on vehicles between November 1 and April 1 of each year. The number of studs or the percentage of metal in contact with the roadway cannot exceed three percent of the total tire area in contact with the roadway. What Hakka's do you have that you cant pull the studs once down here? I have never known Nokian to make a consumer Hakka that wasnt prepared stud holes. Note that it is sometimes necessary to 'reminde' CHP officers of the law; make a copy of the code and bring it along...

I was advised that chains/cables are fine on the front wheels only. No need on the rear for whatever reason. I guess to give the car more understeer at the super-slow speeds you're supposed to be driving it. Something like that.

Although, you couldnt be very smart if you screwed around while you had chains on your car...

Oh well, I'll try and remember that for next year
Too late for me to try and get the Hakka's put on the rims now since I'm leaving later on this afternoon
I'll be down in the Palo Alto area and I might try and go to Bozz on Friday so maybe see you guys around
