Upipe/Downpipe Install Next Weekend
Well summer is finally arriving for me and that means, time to mod my car I am going to get a gruppe-s uppipe and helix downpipe at the end of the week. I was wondering if anyone that has installed one before could come help me out or if you would be kind enough to let me come over if you have the right tools i could do that also. I am pretty positive i can do this on my own but i don't want to get stuck so any help is great. I live in Fremont and it will be either this weekend or sometime next week. Thnx alot if your willing to help out. -dan

I'm going to do the same to my car pretty soon. I know a dude who worked on his own WRX, and installed everything else himself. His labor is cheaper than what Gruppe-S charges for labor. He has the same uppipe and downpipe installs that you're going to do, and he's a pretty cool guy. He lives in Union City, but I live in Fremont, and I'm chillin' at his house all the time.
I think I'm going to purchase my up-pipe on Monday, don't forget to get new gaskets.

I wish I could help you, but I can at least give you some advice if you don't mind. First thing, be patient! Spray all the bolts with WD40 (or whatever you like to use for that) and wait for at least a half n hour. There is a whole bunch of heat shielding you have to take off. Also, if you have elbo extentions for your sockets that can get around bends, that will help you out big time!! The bottom bolts are easy to get to that connect to the exhaust manifold, it is the top ones that go to the turbo that are a pain. Also, you 'may' have to disconnect the passenger side engine mount and jack up the motor (be careful when you do this, don't mess up the oil pan) to remove the stock up-pipe. Also, if the up-pipe you got uses the stock sensor, be careful with the sensor when you take it out. It is rather fragile and you don't want it to break. Also, make sure you have all new gaskets as you will be glad you did down the road. Lastly, I don't remember the torque specs for the bolts, but you really want to make sure that they are very secure. I'm sure you can look up the torque specs on a website somewhere. I'm sure you know this last one, but tighten the bolts evenly...don't tighten one bolt all the way and then tighten the one next to it all the way and so forth. That is a good way to bend the flange. Anyway, good luck and I hope you like it!!

Oh, I didn't notice at first you got a down-pipe also. I have a dp, too and it was really easy. You won't have a problem at all on that. Just more heat shielding to take off. Once again, just make sure you have new gaskets. There are a ton of bolts on that heat shielding over the turbo, it is near rediculous!! Really make sure you tighten ALL the bolts that connect the dp to the turbo and this is where many get exhaust leaks (sounds like a whistling).

I want to join the party too. BUT I want to take out my aftermarket uppipe and but the stock back in. I might be useful because I did my uppipe install with the help of a good mechanic (who also owns a wrx). Somone want to buy a used M2 uppipe with Autometer EGT gauge?
EDIT: I live in Fremont too.

wow lots of help. I will let everyone know when i get the uppipe and downpipe. It will be sometime next week because gruppe-s doesn't have the dp's instock tell then. Also WyldKardzWRX if it's not a problem i would love to come to your house since i don't have all the tools (torque wrench, jack stands, etc) If everything's cool with WyldKardzWRX about the work and bbq and i will bring some hotdogs, hamburgers, and drinks.
also i do have samco i/c hoses. And i guess i will probably have other easy stuff to install if thats not a prob. I am getting cusco front and rear struts from someone i know this weekend.
