Two BART trains crash O_o

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...MOGK.DTL&tsp=1

(02-03) 19:01 PST Oakland -- BART riders are facing 10-to-15 minute delays this evening on trains systemwide as the transit system recovers from a crash involving two trains beneath downtown Oakland.

The trains were heading toward the 12th Street/Oakland City Center station when one sideswiped another about 2:55 p.m. in the Oakland Wye, a junction beneath downtown, said Linton Johnson, a BART spokesman. He described it as a minor incident.

One of the trains had departed West Oakland station; the other was coming from Lake Merritt station.

No one was seriously hurt, but nine passengers reported minor injuries, Johnson said. Passengers on both trains were evacuated on foot.

The front cars on both trains were knocked off the rails, and will need to be placed back on the tracks before they can be moved.

BART officials said they had no estimate for when the trains would be moved.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. BART trains normally operate under an automatic control system that makes it virtually impossible for a collision to occur, Johnson said. But one of the trains in the collision was being operated manually.

BART can’t seem to stay out of the news. With all the publicity, I can hear more money being withdrawn from the Bank of BART this time for the 11 passengers heading to the hospital because something went wrong on the tracks.

Reports indicate that 11 people suffered what appeared to be minor injuries when two BART trains collided at the 12th Street station in Oakland this afternoon.

Injured commuters were being taken on stretchers up escalators and elevators to ambulances waiting on Broadway, and BART officials said one wheelchair-bound passenger may have remained on a train at about 4 p.m.

The accident happened about 3 p.m. and involved one train headed to Richmond and another headed to Pittsburg-Bay Point, Johnson said.

One of the trains went off the rail, he said. Passengers managed to exit the trains and used a catwalk to return to the platform.

The trains were entering the 12th Street station when the collision happened, one coming from Lake Merritt and the other from West Oakland. The BART spokesman said the trains were moving slowly and that the impact probably felt like a “bump” to passengers.

- Looking at these pictures, it looks like more than a bump and looks very expensive.

Wow only 10-15min delays?? A crash like that I would think would make some nasty delay times. Good to hear no major injuries.

Damn!!! Of all places to crash, underground... Yikes!

Glad no one was hurt, you'd think there would be more injuries, perhaps some passengers shot by bart police, or something... Can't believe there were no injuries.

Very accurate analogy of Oakland/SF/Berkeley as a whole.

2 trains, full of people, CRASHING INTO EACH OTHER is now a "minor incident"??? When I scraped my rim against the curb, that was a minor incident, this was a ****ING TRAIN WRECK!!!

haha, just wow...

well thats the kind of well measured, thoughtful response you'd expect from the guys that go around shooting unarmed people pinned on their faces in their back

AHahhaha, Seriously krink... How can you even use the word "minor" in the same sentence that has ANYTHING to do with a train? Let alone a train wreck!?
