I was there, and this was AMAZING. This is not about dead or alive, it's about commemorating Dr. Dre's career and all the artists he helped to bring up/grew up around and worked with. I was up front and he looked slightly funky but VERY realistic.
All in all, even for those who do not like rap or did not grow up around it, it was hard to refuse singing along to California love with 45,000 with a guy on stage that looked like 2pac's twin.

I was also there and it was NOT amazing.
1) "Subtly" putting up your 'beats' logo before the show starts is not tasteful. It was like I was watching a preview for a ****ing movie.
2) Dre had excellent energy build up going through the first 4 or so songs. Just played all the hits, but then totally let the steam off when Snoop RAPPED ANOTHER RAPPERS SONG. And it wasn't even anything insane, it was HOP's "Jump Around". Totally felt like they were pandering to a mostly white bro-friendly crowd.
3) I thought Tupac was going to do an endzone dance bcs he sortof looked like a wide receiver from NFL Street 2. It was very weird having a dead man rapping "Hail Mary" to me.
4) Formulaic application of marketable rappers into their set. Dre never gave the homie Kurupt stage acknowledgement, but was all over Kendrick Lamar. Fitty had a few tracks too but that kinda came out of left field. My NY friends went HAM on that though so I guess it just wasn't really my thing.
What really got to me was a bunch of smaller things that really held the show back from being what it NEEDS to be. Remember, this is the last act of a WORLD FAMOUS 3 day festival, one where traditionally ALL the other stages go quieter, or even end early so the whole festival can catch some of it. There should be drama, flare, everything. I can easily see Dre+Snoop's set being a decent headliner for Rock the Bells tour or something smaller and 1 day but not for Coachella. Last night ended at 11:51 with no Encore (I am very upset they didn't play Xxplosive), security was WACK and Car camping after-parties did not seem to exist. Needless to say I got good and drunk afterwards.
All in all, it was still an unbelievably excellent time. Just no cherry on top. The lineup for '13 must be amazing for me to go next year.

This isn't the first time they ended with a Rap/hip-hop set. Back in '05 I saw Nine Inch Nails followed by Black Star to end the night. Kinda quirky but i guess they like that formula.
Dre was too buff to be fluid. He looked kinda awkward dancing and moving around on stage.

Last year, they ended with Kanye West. I'd still take Dr. Dre and the entire Deathrow/Aftermath umbrella over that. I'm a fan of Yeezy's, but Dre always takes the cake. Oh man, Black Star. That's one act I'd like to see someday if they decided to do a reunion again. I've only seen Mos Def live during a performance with The Roots (they were headlining with Estelle as the opener) I don't care what name he's got these days, he's still Mighty Mos Def to me. Kweli's been in my top 5 list of rappers for the past 10-11 years.
