Swepco 201 is also what the Porsche guys like to use too. I heard once the 6 speeds are very similar to a Porsche gear box.

They should be similar since Porsche designed them for Subaru.

Swepco has worked well for me, that's what LIC recommended and that's what I used.

Trouble getting into reverse is normal on the 5-speed, it's due the design of the tranny. Shift into 4th, then go into reverse -- works fine every time.

+1 there have been a couple times where i just needed to release the clutch pedal then try to get it in gear again(1st and reverse) and that would do the trick. happened with reverse all the time but the 2nd try would always work.

Thanks. Ya thats exactly what I do to finally "get it in" into gear that is. Sounds like I'll get myself some swepco and just deal. Not that its much of a bother. Glad to hear its a common 5spd prob.

I've used everything: SF MTL-R, Swepco 201 and Extra-S. Swepco 201 shifted (80w-90) much stiffer than the Extra-S (75w-90) during the winter months especially during cold starts. Swepco 201 does not shift any better than Extra-S either. I will continue to use Extra-S.

Swepco fan here. My 04 WRX shifts smoother than with whatever the dealer puts in, and smoother than redline, or redline+severe gear. Same on a buddies 04 STi.
