Ok, Found some photos.
So, you say the transmission is ruined? I see you were not the only one who
got stuck in the water, but you did look to be the deepest. Your transmission
got ruined, I never thought about it but I guess it can get water into it too. I've only
ruined and engine, never a transmission, in water.

So, what should one do in a situation where their car was partially submerged in water?
Leave it running? Turn it off as soon as you know it's too deep or your stuck? If it stalls
should you try to restart it? I've never done any serious off roading but always wondered when I
see cars stuck in the water.

Well, an auto tranny is a little more severe then a manual... since the auto depends on a TC that spins in tranny fluid, and without it, basically doesn't work.

the transmission (A340F) has a vent tube on the top. since the water was up there, there is a good chance water/slugde/etc has now ruined it.
clutch packs, maybe the solenoids...
good news? possible rebuild or get a used one. i swapped out the tranny (A340h) on my 90 4runner to a 96. i think it was around $1400...

if you stop, try not to restart as water can get sucked in.
lucky his right front side was up in the air, where the air intake is. or water sucked in is a good time to blow holes in your engine unless you take the plugs out and "flush" the water out.
fortunately, ISH knows what to do now since he saw 2 jeeps a month ago go through this same faith... lol....
