Question tire plans

anyone gotten the road hazzard or any of the tire plans from any tire place? (where they patch up tires for free and give u new tires if its unrepairable)

if so, has anyone ever really gotten the new tires?

just wondering..

Big-O replaced one of their tires on my Audi-
I was out checking roads for a rally by Reno, blew a good 2-inch hole in the sidewall and they replaced it without so much as batting an eye, I was actually kind of surprised.

I've heard that most manufacturers are no longer offering road hazard warranties, but I expect that a lot of tire shops will, although more of them will now be for a price.

IMHO for AWD the road hazards are a waste of money. Since if your tread depths are too different you can screw your diff usually you need to buy all 4. When you do that anyway, you get the tires prorated, so yeah you get 1 free tire, but it usually costs atleast 1/2 the price (since you need to buy 4) unless you have quite a bit less than 50% tread you really don't save any money.

I thought you would only have to replace two?

All 4 need to be close, otherwise the center diff gets pissy.

Also, if they lost money on the deal they wouldn't sell insurance.

Statistically, you will lose money if you buy their replacement plan.

FWIW, my story:

on my truck i bought PEP BOYS tires with the road hazard thing.

so on a sunday afternoon, while not planning on going off-road with these tires (they are street tread vs my other set of tires which are off road tread), i did and ended up with gashed sidewall.

out in the desert in southern calif (near barstow) and on a sunday afternoon, i managed to change to a spare tire and find a phone booth.

found there were 3 pep boys store within an hour of barstow.

closest was 30 minutes and in the same direction where i was going.

pulled in that store around 3:30pm.

by 4pm, i pulled out of there with a new tire mounted and balanced, but $20 less (to pay for the road hazard for that new tire).

so for me, it kinda saved the day.

I actually had a tire knifed and they replaced it. Wheel works.

I had the tire a few days...think that's why. They were cool about it.

I've had one replaced cause I tagged a curb in a parking lot. I was looking over my shoulder and it wasn't marked...BAM. the tire that replaced that was actually the one that got stabbed.

If you have a tire for a few hours or a few days you'll almost have 100% tread still on your car so if you prorate your tire (which all of the shops I know do) then it would be free anyway...

IMHO still a waste of money for AWD

I have always purchased my tires for my truck and my scoob thru Americas Tire Co. and I ALWAYS get the tire replacement plan, it has saved my butt on more than one occation.

1st was when I took my truck to Pismo Dunes....I was mobbin around on the "sand highway" and had a blast. Well, after my weekend fun, I was on my way home and pulled over for a Gas stop....and I noticed that my left rear tire had a HUGE slice almost completely around the perimiter (sp?) of my sidewall, perfectly round....so I stopped by the nearest Americas Tire, and they gave me a brand new tire......free.

2nd was on the scoob, I took a trip to Reno, and when I got up there, I noticed that my left front tire had a big ole bubble bulging outta my sidewall, (the tire got pinched from a pothole and caused the sidewall to bubble), took the car to AT Co. and they gave me a free tire, and hooked me up with a 20% discount on the other 3 since I HAD to buy 4......damn awd.

anyways, yea, Amer. Tire has always hooked me up and treated me great, not to mention all the free tire rotations and balancing whenever I need it. I would def. recommend them for any future tire purchases.

Yeah ATC is cool, cuz everything there if you buy tires there is free. Free valve stems, free balancing, free flat repairs, free rotos. Also, the tire plan is great for any car not having AWD and therefore only needing at most 2 tires if one is unrepairable. Just, I think for AWD having to buy 4, prorating is a better option.
