High Dynamic Range.

In short, you can take 3 pictures, each at different exposures (tripod required). You combine them in photomatix or any other program that does HDR.

yep, best part is that you can just use a point-shoot camera

Adobe CS2 FTW!

There are also ways to "fake" an HDR pic using just one picture. But of course, that's less fun.

As long as you have a point and shoot that you can adjust the exposure manually, you can do HDR.

so you just combine 3 layers and fade the opacity in 3 different strips on the image?

the more the better, i usually work with 7. DSLRs are equipped with a rapid shooting function that can be programmed to shoot mutliple shots in succession at different exposures. That way a tripod isn't absolutely necessary if you have a somewhat steady hand.

Interesting - on this particular image, I would argue the non HDR version is much more dramatic and interesting because you got the single exposure deadon.

Looking at it some more, I think it may be due to the lack of sufficient range, strangely enough. The HDR image doesn't really hit full black in any major area of the image, and the contrast is too low over all. Maybe some curves adjust would help that.
