Swap Question

My RS blew its tranny 2 nights ago so I'm gonna swap it, the question I have is if I put in an 02 WRX motor will the BAR approve it? I am under the impression that you can not put in an older motor into a newer car.

I believe the rules are that you have to put a newer motor into an older car and the newer motor has to have the new smog control and ECU that comes with the engine. You also have to install an engine that is sold in that car, i.e. you can't put a Subaru motor into a Porsche.

You can't put in a newer 3.0 liter 6 cylinder either, because the Impreza was never sold that way.

Now the question is, would they even notice, I have no idea.

I am ignorant. what is BAR?

and I know for sure that you need to change the ECU if you swap a WRX engine, you also need to do all the wiring and you will be able to pass smog.

I don't they will notice the engine since they still made 2.0L turbo engines in the 05 wrx and I don't think there is any difference, engine wise, between 02 and 05 wrx engine. I'm basing this on your profile car being the car the 02 engine will be swapped into.

the engine needs to be same year or newer.

also you will not only have to worry about drive by wire but also immobilizer!

conversion must be same year motor/ecu/etc... or newer than chassis of vehicle. It also must be C.A.R.B. approved, which has nothing to do with BAR

a swap in an '02 plus is not worth the hassle, unless there's a bunch of jessica alba's sweet sweet booty sweat on the seats.

Just replace the trans with a used unit and be done. I think some shop has a 5speed on craigslist for 900 with a warranty.
