Rau, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but the owner of this vehicle doesn't tell you about the cost of upkeep for this vehicle. EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING, apart from oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, and the fluids is a SPECIAL ORDER, DEALER ONLY item. I've owned two of them, while I worked at Subaru dealerships - and knowing that, as well as getting employee pricing on my parts, was what saved my a&& a buttload of money.
You know, I don't expect anyone here to take my word for it - so if you are a doubting Thomas, or Walter, or ________________ , simply call LIC Motorsports, a very reputable and highly respected shop who specializes in all things Subaru, and ask them.
Noah will set you straight.
Take this advice or don't - just as long as you understand that the SVX is like a high-maintenance mistress - absolute joy to ride, but not the cheapest to ride.

Damn it, so did I...May be I should get back to the guy and offer him $100-200 more
Niiiiiiice, just emailed the guy as well. Primarily I want to know how he smogged it, 3rd gen 3SGTE engines were not made available here...

I suppose if the EGR stuff was all external, it would theoretically be possible to swap it over onto the newer 3SGTE.
Something tickles my memory, though, that the 3SGTEs might have had the big-port/small-port issue too (a la 4AG regular and hi-comp). I think the 3rd gen 3SGTEs went to small port and the USDM and 1st to 2nd gens had the big port intakes...anyone remember?
or is this the wrong board to ask that???

Nice car! I'm wondering the same...how he smogged it. It wasn't so simple as just swapping manifolds, they didn't run EGR in Japan for that generation AFAIK. So there wouldn't be a port to put his USDM emissions in to. I thought those were handled internal to the head and not external piping.

I am having the US ERG equipment "installed" on the engine, so I can (hopefully) pass visual and a manual EGR check. According to the shop it will pass a manual(don't recall all the details), but would fail a rolling dyno one (staying clear away from AWD dyno smog stations ). Obviously with JDM ECU, there are no sensors or wires for it regardless of how well it is set up. This is my 1st project of such kind, so I am sure there are plenty ways around it, but they most likely require some hassle.
Also having a generation of engine that was never available in US would seem to be a bigger problem to me (at least in California). You cannot really claim you swapped in a replacement engine from a different model of the brand...plus I am not too sure about running 3rd gen JDM engine on a 2nd gen USDM ECU if you REALLY wanted to make it US legal; it does not sound like a good combination to me.

My current project car is actually ST165 US Alltrac that is receiving ST185 RC JDM power/drive train and ECU swap, so I am undergoing the same headaches.

Yeah, i think the ST165 EGR stuff was all external (86-89 right?) so you might be able to get away with it. G/L! set up pics in your garage when youre done! that should be really nice!
