Anyone take survival classes?

I did not grow up with the benefit of learning how to camp/backpack/survive. I can build a campfire with a couple matches, but that's about it.

I'm not trying to be Bear Gryllis or anything. I just want to learn basics. In fact, I want it biased more towards urban disaster and/or "car broke down in the middle of nowhere" kind of thing.

Any experiences?

a lot of fire departments put out free Community Emergency Response Team(CERT) trainings that sound like what youre interested in. when i instructed those it was mostly like 60-80 year olds in there though haha. check

I have heard REI does some classes. I have no experience with them though.

That is where I learned a lot about wilderness survival.

I'll be the third to second becoming a boy scout. Since you're likely over 18, I would seriously suggest looking at becoming an Assistant Scout Master. You'll get to chaperone a bunch of awesome camping trips and will learn a hell of a lot. Barring that, pick up a Boy Scout Handbook. You'll find information on almost anything to do with the outdoors, and life in general.

Well if you're going to go down the Boy Scout path with your son, it won't hurt to have the Boy Scout Handbook in the house (and it could save your life).

I made it to Life troup 57 Palo Alto. Kinda just lost interest in scouting when I hit 17 or so and never finished. I kick myself ALL the time as I was very close to getting my Eagle.

I got some external pressure to finish haha.

My dad made it to Life and regretted never finishing. So he "made me a deal" where I could drive as long as I continued/got Eagle. If I quit, then I couldnt use my license till I was 18.

Sucked at the time, but Im happy as hell that I finished and earned it.

you can also checkout Nols.edu but it's more towards outdoor medical care...
Also mission college has bunch of Fire classes and I remember there was a rescue class which covers a lot of survival skills..
