the soft racks for surf boards are about $60 at most surf shops...they work perfectly fine.
as for surfing...when i lived in huntington beach most 06 though early07...i tried a few times on a short board (6'04") but couldnt really do anything but go straight for a few seconds. i need to buy a long board, but not till i move back to the coast.

I am also a big fan of board sports. I snowboard, surf, skateboard, body board, and skim board. I suggest if you want to get into surfing, start off with a long board or a hybrid because they are much easier to learn on. Then depending on your style you could get the board that fits it. Long boards are more stable, which makes it a lot easier to get up. I am planning on getting a long board for this summer. I have a hybrid that I am probably going to sell and two short boards that need fixin'. Any questions feel free to ask.

I surf, and shape surfboards.
You should get something a little bigger if you're not used to surfing because smaller boards get thrashed pretty hard if you don't know what you're doing.
i suggest a 7'-ish funboard to get going on.

I agree! And get ready for a MUCH longer learning curve then anything else you have done 'boarding' (snow, wake or skate). You're better off learning the ocean AND waves 1st with a boogie board. When you got THAT figured out, then go jump on the board. I would also suggest a 'soft board' 1st... (I still surf on my kid's 6ft softie). It won't beat you up as bad. Be ready to be pretty much a geek for 18 months if you do it everyday, even longer if it's once and a while!
