Summer tires up in tahoe?

Hey guys, thinking of heading up to tahoe for some snowboarding next weekend. Just got a new set of wheels with General Exclaim UHP summer tires on them. Anyone have any expirience going up there in a Subie with summer tires? Thanks guys.

not really a good idea if theres weather & the roads arent plowed. luckily for you, weather forecast isn't calling for snow...right now.

You'll want to recheck the forecast ( http://www.snowforecast.com/CaliforniaSkiResorts ) on like Wednesday to be sure. You should have cables *just in case* in your trunk anytime you're making a winter trip to tahoe.

you don't want to end up being one of those guys who crashed because he drove in the snow with summer tires. if you do, don't post a thread about it unless you want to be ridiculed as an idiot

i would link you a thread on nasioc about a guy who did just that, but i almost feel like i'm not supposed to link threads from nasioc here...

actually, i'll give you a preview of what you would see:

OP: so i was driving home from work tonight and a small snow storm a
had left about an inch of snow on the ground and i was 100 yards from my house and i was doing 10mph when i slid into the curb.

Adviser: No one will be able to tell the extent of damage of the internet. Especially without even seeing any pictures. You may just need an alignment, you may need alot more.

I never take my car to the dealer, they are way over priced. But you have a brand new car, so maybe you get hooked up. I would hope so.

Adviser: Most likely bent the control arms and possibly a strut, look under your car and compare the side of the impact to the other side and look for differences. If you broke your wheels, you hit hard enough to do suspension damage. Make sure to get an alignment after the repairs.

Sympathizer: I feel for you. I drifted into a curb my first winter (with RE92A) going less than 10 mph. About $1000 in damages or so, 1 new wheel and 1 tie rod.

OP: Thanks. These Dunlop sp's are a complete joke in as little as 2 inches of snow.

Ridiculer: Summer Only tires not working well in snow? NO ****ING WAY!

Ridiculer: Summer tires lose grip due to temperature long before snow becomes an issue.

VDC wasn't the problem here.

Ridiculer: another 2010 on summer only tires.

Ridiculer: Those Dunlops are SUMMER tires, not made for any amount of snow.

Yea man don't go up there with those tires. Ask around for someone to see if they have some all weather or even better snow tires you can borrow. Better be safe then sorry.

Yeah not a very good Idea to roll up there in summer only tires, as stated before they loose grip well before any snow or Ice hit the ground, If its cold up there then its not a good idea...

All season's are great but not the best. I would keep your set of summers for any time of the year when your not going to Tahoe and pick up a set of wheels of your choice and get some Blizzak LM 25's on there and use those for when ever you go to tahoe during the winter.

Summer tires are great in Tahoe, in the summer.

In any case, its not a good idea, but as long as you don't drive like a complete idiot it shouldn't be an issue as long as the weather is kind. They have been keeping the roads plowed pretty decently and a guy on here that I know drove up in potenza re760 sports last month for a day trip and had zero problems.

Of course if you are trying to be a badass who wants to pretend he's a WRC driver in the snow on a time attack, by all means get yourself some winter tires or at the very least all season. GL!

I just took my RE01s up there. Just dont go up in a storm.

My opinion, if you have to ask this question in the first place, you probably shouldnt go up there with summer tires.

Isn't All-Season tires = Mud and Snow (M+S) tires?

I think you are confused w/ REAL snow tires. This is Snow tires' symbol
