I bought an '02 WRX used. Does that start the "count down" to my next smog from the time it was smogged by the dealer for re-sale... i.e. 2 years +/- from when I bought it in Dec. of '03, or will it not need to be smogged untill four years from the original owners puchase date... i.e. April 2006? It's only five or so months difference, but I was just curious if anyone knew.

Car Info: this required information?
cars 2000 and up get smoged every 4 years now and under 2000 every 2 years. i havent heard of the AWD being exempt tho, so does this mean that we dont even have to go to the visual test? dont they just stick something in the exhaust pipe? how would that make AWD's exempt.

We are only exempt from the rolling dyno part of the test as all dynos currently required by law are two wheel dynos whcih wouldn't work for us for obvious reasons. We still have to undergo the visual, the sniffer, and ODBII. It's cool though, as the dyno part is what gives most vehicles trouble.

To be totally safe... yes. Although it is my understanding that our cars should pass the sniffer with a catless uppipe as long as you reinstall the other two cats and get the car warm before the test. That is assuming you have a friendly smogger that will over look the fact that your UP won't pass the visual. To be honest though, I don't believe the everage smog tech knows where to look for the UP, let alone what it SHOULD look like.
