it wasn't the drivers dying that killed the group, it was the spectators that were getting run into that finally did it in.

famous RS200 running into a rather large crowd.

On the "Lagoa Azul" stage of Portuguese Rally near Sintra everything was to go tragically wrong. Portuguese national champion Joaquim Santos crested a rise to find the road blocked with spectators crowding to see the fastest cars come through. He lost control of his Ford RS200 while trying to stop and plunged into the crowd. Thirty-one people were injured and three were killed. All the top teams immediately pulled out of the rally and Group B was placed in jeopardy.

It was actually a mixture of both, at least 2 manufacturers withdrew their teams after drivers deaths. And spectators are still getting hit to this day.

Basically the cars were pushed to absurdity where the only way they could go any faster is to straighten out the road. That tuned it into an exercise in insanity or who had the most *****

FWIW, I haven't heard of a spectator getting hit at a WRC event in years.

Actually the FIA has insisted that organizers be much more diligent about having spectators marshaled and out of harms way, stages now get canceled where they would have run regardless back in the day
