first season with my wrx wagon, is it gonna be safe for me to use the stock re92's? or should i get a better set of all season/winter tires?

I'm not trying to be picky, but 'safe' is kinda absolute. There's no guarantee that you won't crash with any tires. RE92s aren't the best, but if they have decent tread left and you take it steady, you should be ok. I drove to Tahoe for several seasons on RE92s.

tread on the tires are pretty good, i would say at least 75%. i've driven to tahoe a ton of times with different vehicles but gonna be first season with the wrx. i plan on taking it nice and slow.

if i must, i'll probably buy better snow tires, but i just dont wanna change the wheels everytime i wanna go.

You should go buy some cheap used snow tires if you have money to spare, its a pretty good investment if u go to tahoe alot, otherwise just drive slower =D

It sounds like you already have snow experience - I think you'll be fine.

I used RE92s for a couple of years, then picked up sets of rims for auto-x, summer, and winter. For winter I use a reasonable M+S. I put them on for the first ski trip, and take them off after the last, so I don't bother swapping all through the winter. Besides, they are better in rain than summer tires.

Don't drive like an asshat and you will be fine. I drove on them a LOT in the snow my first full season and never wreaked.

Ditto, I drove on them in a snowstorm the day after I bought my WRX, other than a couple little fishtails I was fine. Sure it'd be nice to get better tires, but that's a WANT not a NEED.

I think they do ok in the snow, or get some winter tires for like $50 and u can really have some fun

I don't know of any winter tires for less than $90 that I'd put on my car- spending a little more for a seriously good snow tire is well worth it if you plan to spend any more then the occasional weekend up there.

If you only plan to go up a few times, then the RE92 or any decent M+S rated all-season with at least half its tread depth remaining should be fine.

The re92 aren't really great at anything, but they are ok for snow I suppose. Just take it easy and don't
pretend like you are ken block and you should ok.

I had re92's on for my first 2 snow seasons and I never had a problem

+1 It's amazing how many people won't admit to pilot error.

RE92s were okay for me until the tread started to wear low. I went up with 40% tread left and the rear end kept getting loose. I'll never do that again.
