One of the things with an oval speaker is internal modulation. Soundwaves internal to the cone reflect off the cone itself. The reflections aren't linear in an oval cone. Those reflections can cause cancellation and result in sound that is less clear in the most critical listening range 300-3000Hz. If the 6x9 was being used primarily to get more bass from a smaller location, then they could be perfectly effective, however the midrange performance will likely suffer.

Sorry, but I was explained by some of the pros back in the 90's as well because 6x9's are oval and would not have perfect symmetry and therefore add some level of distortion by where the magnet is compared to the edges it just isnt optimal.
Round speakers with the magnets and equal spacing to the edges produce far greater clarity.. you get a perfect sinus when you measure the outcome of a wave. There may be some write up about this controversy..
Though when it comes to subs, this doesnt matter much because its just for bass for example Kicker Square speakers they seem to work well. And again its not for highs and mids where the higher clarity is more crucial. Not to say bass isnt crucial when it comes to either a loud ported boomy box or a sealed enclosure for more tight clarified bass..

My knowlege comes from old school pro's as well. I have helped build many SQ and DB vehicles. 6X9's are not my personal pref and i only run them in my truck where SQ is not my #1 goal (and i dont want to waste a decent set of seperates) since there is so much ambient noise to begin with and at their cross over point they produce little bass, the 12s behind the front seats take care of that.
Someone mentioned mounting your tweets up high on the A pillar this is not a good idea if your going for a good soundstage and imaging, you want to mount your tweets inline or near the same level as your mids. mounting them up high makes it so the sound from the tweets gets to your ears before the mids. this is not good for spatial imaging/sound stage. if you dont give a crap about that and you just want to be loud then dont listen to us who rant about Sound Quality and staging. mount some 6.5s all around and toss some 12s or 10s in the trunk and call it a day.

K... So no woofer for me.. Gonna lOok into 6.5 all around.. I'm trying to get as much bass as possible without getting woofers/ruining the voice sound.. Do I need an amp for the inside speakers? What 6.5's should i look at, considering the sound I want..,

I'm still baffled by people raving about Focal, they make awesome midbass drivers but good god are their tweeters shrill(titanium bleh).
Brian, is Morel still making JL's Evo series? The C2/C5's sort of look like Tempos, and I guess I could see the ZR series being Hybrid Ovations maybe?
I guess I should plug All Pro Audio in Santa Clara for my install. I'm pretty sure they're still giving an I-club discount if you mention I sent you. Though it's usually better if I give them a heads-up to expect peeps.
I used to be a fan of the "only fronts, forget rears" mentality, but now with TA being so readily available rear staging is super nice to have and pretty cheap. Grab a set of Morel Maximo Coaxials for next to nothing and you get nice rear fill without having to break the bank. Hell, you could even grab DB Drives, they're usually not important. I'd never advise anyone to do what I did, that's for sure.
Front Speakers:
Morel Supremo Piccolo Supremo 28mm cavity-back tweeter 2.6” diameter $629.00
Morel Accuset MX22 2-way programmable Crossover 1800hz HP/LP $319.00
Morel Elate SW 6 Hexatech 3” EVC shallow depth sub $799.00
Rear Doors:
Morel Integra Ovation XO 6 6 1/2” Integrated 2-Way System $649.00
And I feel I cheaped out on the fronts.
Stupid? Maybe to you, but I'm sure plenty of people consider everyone on I-Club stupid for spending the money we do on our cars for mods. How about you don't call me stupid for enjoying car audio more than you?

for my 04 STi, the biggest ones you can install without cutting is a 6.5" speaker. 04 needs a spacer.
forget 6x9s. forget rear speakers.
if you cant/wont install a subwoofer system, google "bass transducers"...
a few years ago, at the CES show, i saw in a ford taurus. it was from a manufacturer called "AURA" (IIRC). all they had were front speakers and a couple of their bass transducers.
these things are about the same dimensions as a 5.5" speaker. but you normally mount these into a solid surface. a metallic surface like the those under the front seats.
i swear that the car had at least a 10" subwoofer. after listening, i went through the car looking for a subwoofer. nothing. the guy then moved the front seats and showed me the bass transducers... i was shocked!
i eventually bought a couple of them but never got around to mounting them in the car. i then had this silly idea of mounting them on the chairs i use to watch movie in the house. same principle...
