There are plenty of shops that are scooby pros that won't charge you, probably just have to ask around. GST, AI to name a few.

AAMCO reads codes for free, and autozone can also lend you a scantool.

Tell those shops that it's bad business to charge money for such an easy diagnostic.

is it possible to unmarry an accessport from someones car then marry it to yours to pull the code? or is that a PITA?

Might as well buy a new one. Takes 400 bux or some high price to unmarry it.

If you guys can wait until middle of this week, I can scan the codes for you using my OBD2 scanner for free as long as you come to SF.

I'm in Livermore if anyone wants a code pulled. I invested in a OBDII reader and I think it's well worth it.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=99722

Occasionally Harbor Freight has 15 or 20% off coupons, so it'll be even cheaper. You can also get the ones where it just tells you the code and doesn't tell you what it means (look up the CEL code online) for a lot cheaper as well.

Sunnyvale/Santa Clara if anyone needs an OBD2 scan tool.

Question - The place that sold me the scanner says that it makes the ECU tag itself as possibly modified. Anyone got anything on this?

you can unmarry from someone else's car, marry it to yours, check the code, then unmarry it from your car. It might take a minute or two, but I don't see why you couldn't do that...definitely not $400 to do that....
