Last time I was there my fun time consisted of a really tasty sandwhich on the beach after sunset (noone else there, think its technically closed at this time) and a doobie.
I'd try to find a bar and restaurant area by the beach if possible.

Newport Beach is generally filled with pretty spendy places, but its a nice place... if you have time and the desire to do so, you should try driving up/down HWY 1. If you're driving a moded car, just keep it at the limit and don't drive like an asshat.
Avoid Irvine if you're a minority or driving a modified car... they'll pull you over.
If you're into bars and such, you can head north to Huntington Beach - beware of the bros/wannabe MMA fighters.
Laguna Beach and Dana Point to the south is nice too. There are also a great deal of parks and open space...
South Coast Plaza is great if you're wanting to shop, disneyland and knotts isn't too far away.
If its late and you're hungry, Harbor House in Seal Beach or Dana Point is really awesome and have some of the best chili/chili cheese fries.
If you're into ramen/japanese - go to Shin Sen Gumi - they have two storefronts - ramen refill for a few bucks.
Lee's Sandwiches on brookhurst is open 24/7 - their coffee will keep you up for DAYS.

Goathill Tavern (in Costa Mesa on Newport Blvd) has 140ish beers on tap and a pretty good vibe. That used to be my bar when I was still living down there. Eat at Wahoo's on the corner of Bristol and Baker - really good 'surf' food.
Hit up the Fun Zone in Balboa. Ride the ferris wheel or the 'Dark and Scary' ride. Take the ferry across to Balboa Island and there are some good eats over there, too.
There is a ton of stuff to do down there.

I used to live there too. Some highlights, if you can:
Eat at the Crab Cooker. Stand in line, it's worth it, if only because it is an original.
Visit the wedge - even on a small day it is a neat spot, and you can go out on the jetty for a better view of the beach. Just don't fall off of it.
I second the Goat Hill, as well as the Balboa Ferry and Fun Zone. Cruise PCH and check out the exotic dealerships.
Breakfast at Mutt Lynch's, with a schooner of beer sitting on the front windows. Lunch at TK burger.
Rent a cruiser and ride the boardwalk. Or walk it.
Good luck and have fun!
