I'd say that unless you completely deny exceeding 65, you will get convicted on a lower speed infraction (say 75 in a 65). A lower speed ticket does cost less, maybe even $100 less, but you'll still be getting a point on your license, and your insurance company will be hearing about it. That's the part which will suck.

Technically the speed limit is THE LIMIT. Now I know that most people drive like 80 or so on the freeway, but technically a cop can pull over anyone of those folks "going the flow" for speeding. So who does he usually pick on? The flashiest or fastest looking car in the pack. That can often mean us. My advice? Keep it under 70; cops usually give a grace range of about +5mph to adjust for slight variations in speedo readout (but they CAN bust you for ANYTHING over 65 technically, NO MATTER WHAT). So what if the *** nugget to your left or behind is going 75 or 80+ mph? Let him get the ticket. Just stay in lane 3 if you have to. Leave 10 minutes earlier if you have to. It just ain't worth the hassle IMHO.
Sorry this sounds a little preachy. It's just that I'm kinda sick of getting speeding tickets and flushing my hard-earned money down the government drain. And if I really was exceeding speed limit and was caught, well I personally would find it difficult to argue -- I did technically break the law, even if it's a stupid law.
Anyhow, you can either fight the ticket (which it sounds like you intend to do) or just pay it and go to traffic school to avoid added insurance. Then drive nice n easy like me

It also depends on how he clocked your speed, whether by pacing or by radar, and then you can fight it by asking a few questions (date of last radar calibration prior to the ticket, with documentation; tuning fork serial numbers matching radar gun serial numbers; date of last speedometer calibration, with documentation; moving versus stationary radar; number of vehicles around, which is important if it was radar; etc). Also remember that radar guns have a +/- 5mph error, which most judges know about, which is why tickets that are only 5mph over and clocked by radar are thrown out.

If you are gonna speed, keep it about 5 mph over. Most cops don't care, because the fines aren't worth the cost to the court, or the cops time if you choose to fight the ticket. ... and like I said earlier, www.ticketassassin.com is your friend!
