Smog check is getting even stricter
Star program is coming out in January 2013 and the grading process is so harsh that I dont see any technician willing to smog a modified vehicle.
Tire size/gear mods/weight reduction/amount of obd2 monitors still incomplete are just a few things they will grade every technician and station on.
This is such bs and Im unsure if there is anything we can do about it. They even grade the techs on things that are out of their control. Too many bad grades which can happen in a bad income area can cause you to get ticketed or lose your license.
first QA now this. man i pick the wrong professions.... brb back to school

Why would Tire Sizing & Weight Reduction have anything to do with SMOG? How much my car weighs does not affect the amount of emissions coming out of the tail pipe at all.

I can see how tire size and weight reduction can affect mileage. Tires that are heavier and wider means more energy is needed to get them to move. As for weight reduction, less weight means less energy is needed to move the car. So more used energy means lower mileage and more pollution....I guess?

and yes its a loaded dyno test so weight will effect the emissions.

don't they already set the vehicle weight when they are on the dyno?
As far as I know, still cannot dyno AWD vehicles, or vehicles that cannot disable traction control.

right we dont dyno our cars till they force us to buy 4 wheel dynos and our monitors are fake turned on by 3rd party programs but im sure some of you guys own other modded cars that need smogs.
As some of you have seen, its very hard to get your cars smogged with aftermarket intercoolers, catted aftermarket downpipes and street legal cais so you can see how most techs will hesitate to smog any modded car once the star program is active because it tracks individual tech data and shop data.
I can list examples where it hurts us but this is really very depressing watching the state bend us over every few yrs. On the bright side for the consumers it will cause more competition and drop the prices down but lets be real who cant afford 50$ every 2 years for a smog when they own a car? for most cars a full tank of gas costs 50$ now...
