uhhh
The Mini is probably faster in an autocross event, but I'm guessing that's about it. In a straight line there seems to be no comparison.
I would be interesting to see how the two fair going head to head on a big track like Willow Springs. The Mini would probably have faster corner speeds while the WRX could make up for lost time in the straights.

point that guy to the results of the race and let him make his own conclusions. it's useless to force an opinion on him.

But why is AWD necessarily an advantage?
My own personal take is that AWD vehicles make it easier for the driver to take the car to it's limits, whereas RWD is faster overall.

It will depend on the duration of the race. AWD's advantage comes into play when traction becomes an issue. Look at the old Firehawk races. The Audi's dominated the series because in longer races (but not endurance races) where tires wore and got overheated, the rear wheel drive cars had problems with traction where the AWD quattros continued to put down consistent lap times. These races were short enough that you could get through them on one set of tires and not long enough for a tire change in mid-race.
